Nos levantamos en Bujaruelo y las nubes que cubrían el cielo eran tan negras que parecía de noche. La previsión era de tormenta inminente así que nos fuimos al bar a tomar unas tostadas. Ahí una pareja nos dijo que iban a ir hasta Torla en taxi 4x4 y que podíamos ir con ellos. Miramos el mapa y la mayoría del camino de Bujaruelo a la llanura de Ordesa es por pista o carretera así que aceptamos.
En Torla el cielo estaba algo más claro así que nos subimos al autobús lanzadera (3 € solo ida) que te lleva a la llanura de Ordesa (durante el verano no dejan pasar a coches particulares) en unos 20 minutos. En el bus conocimos a una de las guardas del refugio de Góriz que nos dijo que la tormenta tenía pinta de irse hacia Pineta.
Una vez en Ordesa empezamos a caminar con una llovizna floja que no molestaba porque el primer tramo de caminata hacia la cola de caballo es por el bosque.
Una vez salimos del bosque salió también el sol, menuda suerte. Llegamos hasta la famosa Cola de Caballo y tomamos el desvío a la derecha para llegar hasta el refugio de Góriz, que está a 2195 m, por el sendero normal.
De camino al refugio nos encontramos con una pareja donde el chico llevaba las dos mochilas y al fijarnos un poco más vimos que la chica llevaba un brazo en cabestrillo. Les preguntamos y nos explicaron que había granizado mucho esa mañana y que al salir a caminar por los alrededores del refugio ella se había resbalado y roto la muñeca.
Seguimos caminando hasta llegar al refugio, donde había un ir y venir de helicópteros frenético porque estaban cambiando el mobiliario, y parecía un escenario de post batalla campal. La granizada había sido tan fuerte y las condiciones para ascender al Monte Perdido tan malas que nadie se había movido del refugio en toda la mañana.
Comimos y nos fuimos hacia la Fuen Blanca, donde Marina había visto que hay una cabaña de pastores donde se puede pernoctar, ascendiendo primero al Collado de Arrablo, entre la Punta Custodia y el macizo del Monte Perdido.
El camino que elegimos es la alternativa más larga y con desnivel más fuerte para llegar hasta el Collado de Añisclo. La otra opción es ir por la Faja de las Olas, con un recorrido más aereo, que aquel día estaba oculto por una nube gigante.
El descenso hacia la Fuen Blanca, punto en el que acaba el Cañón de Añisclo y da comienzo el ascenso hacia el collado del mismo nombre, fue muy peliagudo. Estaba todo lleno del granizo de la mañana.
La bajada por el Barranco de Arrablo es muy bonita ya que estaba todo lleno de cataratas grandes, pequeñas y medianas; todo estaba muy verde debido a las abundantes nevadas del invierno y hacía el suficiente fresco como para que nu hubiese bichos.
Hay un par de tramos peligrosos en los que tuvimos que concentrarnos mucho; guardamos los palos y descendimos por unas paredes con muy pocos apoyos que a veces ponían los pelos de punta.
Cruzamos el río un par de veces y ya la bajada hasta la Fuen Blanca se simplifica un poco. Encontramos la cabaña, con sitio para dos personas pequeñas, y la ocupamos. Estaba tan escondida que un par de montañeros pasaron por delante y ni nos vieron.
Nos bañamos en el río Bellos y lavamos la ropa. We wake up in Bujaruelo: wind blowing strong enough for the tent cover to be completely dry, clouds covering the sky and so dark we though we had set the alarm wrong. The thunder seemed unavoidable. We went to the bar and had some toasts and checked the forecast for the third time. Then, a couple who was there said that they had some 4WD transport organised to pick them up and drive them into Torla. We checked the trail from Bujaruelo to Torla to see that it was mostly a rural road so asked them if we could join to try to skip the rain.
In Torla the sky was slightly more clear and we decided to take the shuttle bus to the park (3 € one way, 3.5 € return) which dropped us off in the parking lot at Ordesa Flats. Private vehicles aren’t allowed to drive or park up in this lot during the summer months as a system to limit the park visitors up to 1800 people per day. The bus takes only 20 minutes and they depart pretty often. At the bus we met Goriz Hut’s cook who said that she would bet that the thunder was heading towards Pineta.
Once we arrived in Ordesa we decided to walk as the trail was protected under the thick forest for a good bit and the rain was very light.
As the forest thinned the sky cleared and when we finally got to the open flats, the sun was shinning. We saw the popular and crowded Cola de Caballo (this is the name of a waterfall that literally translates as Horse Tail) and took the bend towards the also busy Goriz Hut. There’re two tracks to get there: a simple walking trail or a more technical route. Just in case the thunder decided to come back we took the simple option to get up to 2195 m where this mountain lodge is located.
On that path we met a couple, the man carrying both large backpacks. Looking a bit closer we realised that she had a wrapped arm. We felt really sorry and asked them what happened. It turned out that in the morning it hailed quite heavily, she slipped while walking just around Goriz hut and broke her wrist. Very unfortunate.
We kept going up to the busiest helicopter patch we have ever seen. They were renewing the hut’s furniture and the site looked like a post-apocalyse movie scene. It was busy anyway. The weather had been not good at all and many people cancelled their plans and spent the morning around the hut.
We had our lunch and left for Fuen Blanca (literally means White Fountain) where, according to our notes, there would be a shepherd’s shelter to spend the night. First we had to cross Arrablo saddle located between Custodia Peak and Monte Perdido Massif.
From Goriz to Añisclo’s saddle there’re two tracks again. Visiting, as we did, Fuen Blanca takes the longest and the largest cumulative elevation gain and loss. The alternative of going via the Faja de las Olas (Waves’s Girdle is the meaning of this interesting name) is an exposed route passing on and through a long cliff not suited for a day in which you’ve met someone who slipped off on flat ground right in front a large mountain hostel and broke a wrist.
The descend to Fuen Blanca, where Añisclo canyon ends and starts the ascend to the saddle of the same name, wasn’t either a simple scramble. The hail still left from the night and morning thunder didn’t make it any easier.
We found Arrablo gully was particularly scenic with its many small, medium, large and extra large waterfalls; the deep green vegetation after such a wet winter and a temperature perfect for our enjoyment.
Climbing down to Fuen Blanca we had to sort out a few dangerous parts that required all our senses to be focused on the terrain. Putting our poles away was definitively a must to get both hands free. The vertical walls had some holds but they were mostly narrow, some covered with frozen hail and sometimes not very close to each other. It was a challenging scramble that required patience and temperance more than any other skills as the drop under us was long and completely vertical.
We crossed the river a couple of times when the difficulty of the trail decreases but definitively still requires concentration. Where the two valleys meet, we found the tiny shepherd’s shelter. It’s just big enough for two small people like us and we hurried to move our gear in an save our sleeping spot. It was made of stone and was very well camouflaged in the surroundings so that people hardly saw it when walking pass.
We washed ourselves and our clothes up in Bellos (Beautiful) River and prepared and ate our dinner inside a bivouac two meters across from our cabin while listening to the resident flock of sheep eating prickly nettle, the native plant of our spot for the night.
