We left Sorogain Hostel and went straight into a thick fog while climbing the steep hill behind the building. Again, we managed to stay on the right track by using the GPS app. The trail goes towards Mendiaundi heights where we found a group of beautiful horses grazing on fresh green grass and whispering to each other how crazy were tourists these days.
We reach Mendiaundi summit. The views were truly amazing, behind the fog. Ot that’s what we have been told. Then, the trail descends again to Burguete/Auritz where the GR11 meets the popular Camino de Santiago coming from Roncesvalles, located only 2 km up the hills. After Auritz we were blessed with a few sun beams bathing our skin for a wee bit. From Auritz to the tiny town of Orbara the trail is an easy wide path crossing a pretty landscape but slightly boring. The track descents towards the river and then there’s the last steep climb to the village of Hiriberri. Before the steep downhill, the trail was covered with long and wet grass and Enrique got four ticks. He didn’t notice until we stopped walking for the day and the locals helped him to release them. Now we know that they need to sink in some kind of grease such as oil but vaseline could also work.
In Hiriberri we knocked at the only accommodation in town: Case Aguerre. The owner Anabel opened the door but she had a full house. The next day the region held a road biking event called Irati Xtrem and all hostels, hotels, rural houses and the alike were fully booked. Over a coffee, Anabel told us about the problem in Hiriberri with rooms. Hiriberri is marked in all GR11 maps and guides as the start/end of stage but it turns out that it doesn’t have a hostel, hotel or camping, as all those guides state. The only current business to provide shelter is Anabel’s house and they’re obviously overly busy. Besides, their permit type doesn’t really allow them to sell separated rooms, although they obviously do rather than leaving people on the streets.
Anabel has of course raised this issue to higher positions but authorities have remained unhelpful so far. Luckily for the hiking community, she and her family are generous beyond imagination and they left us sleep in a cosy bed at the basement and have a shower. Not only that, she invited us for breakfast and to warm up with some tea by the fireplace on the day we arrived. For dinner we went to the only bar in town where they serve km 0 everything. We chose to have a couple of horse burgers with salad. Yup, those cute horses we saw on the way were living stock. Happy and healthy food to be tasty in the future. That day the Spain National team played the World Cup against Portugal. Among the 15 people at the bar, 14 discreetly cheered for Portugal and just one vocally did for Spain. The Euskera-speaking part of Navarra shares its National identity with Euskal Herria and its inhabitants, likewise Catalonia, tends to not be very Spain-friendly. It wasn’t a smart move to show that much enthusiasm towards Spain’s goals.
