Transpirenaica gr11 etapa 21: àreu - arinsal

Por fin, después de dos días infernales en todos los sentidos caminísticos, volvíamos a la montaña bonita, fresca y con vistas. Hoy llegábamos a Andorra.

Íbamos a tomárnoslo con calma debido al tute del día anterior. Pensábamos llegar hasta el refugio de Baiau a mediodía y pasar ahí la noche. 

Salimos de Àreu por la pista que lleva hasta el Pla de la Selva, que está genial para tomar unos cacahuetes y un poco de Aquarius. Nos encontramos con Ernest y Caty que también tuvieron una etapa dura el día anterior y los dos andan tocados de las rodillas.
Desde el Pla de la Selva se asciende gradualmente también por una pista de tierra hasta el aparcamiento de La Molinassa, donde empiezan un montón de recorridos, entre ellos el que sube hasta la Pica d’Estats.

A partir de aquí, 9 km después de salir de Àreu, se acabó ya la pista y fuimos caminando por un sendero en medio del Pla de Boet y el Pla de Arcalís. 
Subimos hacia el Refugio de Baiau que está al lado del Estany de Baiau (2517 m) donde había bastante gente. No eran ni las 11 de la mañana así que el plan de tomarnos la etapa con calma ya había fracasado estrepitosamente.

El día estaba despejado y el sol no apretaba demasiado, teníamos fuerzas y el ascenso hasta el Port de Baiau (2757 m) se veía empinado pero corto. Decidimos seguir cuesta arriba.
El ascenso fue muy similar a las excursiones que hacíamos en las Rocosas Canadienses, con terreno de rocas sueltas muy empinado en el que había que ayudarse con los bastones todo el tiempo.
Las vistas desde el Port de Baiau son muy bonitas. Teníamos al lado el Comapedrosa, el pico más alto de Andorra (2942 m), pero nos dio pereza subirlo porque ya estábamos animándonos a alargar la etapa hasta Arinsal.
Empezamos a bajar hacia el Estany Negre y vimos que había banderitas marcando el recorrido. Se acercaba el fin de semana y, para variar, nos iba a pillar otro evento deportivo. En este caso la Skyrace Comapedrosa.
Aún quedaba nieve y hielo alrededor del Estany Negre por lo que tuvimos que pasar con mucho cuidado. Una vez bordeado el lago el camino baja ya directo hacia el Refugio del Comapedrosa.
La bajada hasta Arinsal es sencilla y Marina volvió a encontrar arándanos. Una vez llegamos a Arinsal estuvimos mirando la etapa del día siguiente y vimos que era en su mayoría urbana, cosa que nos aburre enormemente, así que cogimos un bus a Andorra la Vella y desde ahí a Encamp.
En Encamp nos quedamos en el Hotel Andino donde Marina había encontrado una habitación por 38 € como oferta especial de última hora con desayuno incluido.
Aprovechamos para ir al súper a comprar lo que ya era nuestra cena típica de cuando parábamos en un pueblo: tortilla de patatas, queso, ensalada y yogur griego.

Great! After two days of what I call pointless hiking, we’re back to regular hiking with nice views, fresh air and cooler temperatures. Because we’re getting to Andorra today. 

The plan for the day was to take it easy as the day before had been mentally and physically exhausting. We wanted to get to Baiau open hut in the middle of the day and spend there the night. 

We left Àreu and took the forestal road that took us to the flats of La Selva (literally means rainforest, but it is not such thing). It was a great place to munch some nuts and drink some electrolytes. There we met our friends Ernest and Katy who also had a hard day yesterday and both were suffering a bit from their knees. 
From this flats, the trail ascends gradually up to La Molinassa carpark where many hikes start including one of the classic routes to Pica d’Estats, the highest peak of Catalonia. 

From here on, 9 km after leaving Àreu, the rural road ends and a single trail passes between Boet and Arcalís flats. 
We climbed up to Baiau Hut next to the Estany with the same name (2517 m) where many people was already there. It was very early and we thought that we didn’t really need to stop walking at 11 am even on a day that we wanted to take it easy. 

It was another clear and sunny but not hot day. We decided, then, to carry on to Baiau Pass (2757 m) which looked steep but not too long. 
The ascend was a nice scramble that reminded us a lot of some of the terrain we found in the Canadian Rockies: steep, loose sharp rocks that made you thank the hiking poles quite a lot. It was not the kind of scramble in which you need to have your hands free. 
From the summit of Baiau Pass, the views were amazing. Just across form us there is  Comapedrosa, the highest peak in Andorra (2942 m). It doesn’t take longer than about 30 minutes to reach the summit from there. However, we didn’t bother to climb because we had already decided to make it to Arinsal. 
While descending to Estany Negre (Black) we saw another set of marking flags. For sure there would be something going on this next weekend. It was the Skyrace Comapedrosa, now. We better get away from there the sooner the better to skip the crowds. 
Around Black Estany there was still quite a bit of snow and ice and we had to cross mindfully and carefully not to slip. After the lake, the trail descends quite fast to Comapedrosa guarded hut. 
The way down to Arinsal is simple and we found wild blueberries again. Once down in Arinsal we checked the next stage to find out that goes mostly from town to town crossing a mainly  urban areas. This is not the kind of walking we want to do so we took a bus to Andorra la Vella (the capital of Andorra) and then another to Encamp to skip that part. 
In Encamp we found an incredible last minute offer on line to stay at Hotel Andino where the room was only 38 € and included breakfast. 
We took the chance to go to a pretty big supermarket to stock up our packs, eat some real fruit and prepare our usual town-dinner: Spanish tortilla, cheese, salad and greek yoghurt for dessert.
