Transpirenaica gr11 etapa 27: sant aniol - albanyà

Nos levantamos con el sol y nos fuimos a desayunar a la parte delantera de la Ermita de Sant Aniol, donde nos encontramos a Ernest desmontando su tienda. Caty había vuelto a Valencia el día anterior.
Nos contó que por la noche la zona del refugio se había convertido en una zona de botellón donde unos 20 adolescentes habían estado de parranda hasta hacía poco rato. Qué suerte tuvimos con nuestra zona de acampada.
Nos pusimos en marcha listos para enfrentarnos a las orugas del boj otra vez. Empezó Marina en cabeza a lo bruto como el día anterior hasta que pasado un rato se cambió por Ernest, que casi mide 2 m así que tanto le daba ir primero o último. Se puso él primero con un palo y empezó a andar retirando todas las orugas que podía haciendo movimientos circulares con el palo.
Una vez ascendimos pasados los 800 metros las orugas desaparecieron, como ya nos había advertido Avelina en Talaixà. Seguimos subiendo hasta llegar al Coll de Bassegoda (1102 m) donde empezó la parta ya fea y pesada de la etapa.
Entramos en el lado de la solana de la montaña, en plena ola de calor, donde el recorrido transcurría por una pista forestal de tierra y polvo.
Íbamos bajando a buen ritmo hacia el Refugi de Bassegoda cuando, pasados unos 10 minutos desde que empezamos a descender, me di cuenta de que me faltaba la tapa del objetivo de la cámara. Sabía más o menos dónde se me podía haber caído así que paramos a la sombra de un árbol, me quité la mochila y volví a subir hacia el Coll de Bassegoda.
Cuando iba subiendo vi que había un desvío marcado con las señales del GR11 que nos habíamos saltado. Volví a avisar a Marina y llevamos las mochilas hasta ahí. La pista era tan clara y aburrida que no habíamos visto la señal. Volví hacia el Coll de Bassegoda y encontré la tapa del objetivo.
Una vez ya listos para volver al camino se nos cruzó un todoterreno que se paró, bajó la ventanilla y apareció el señor que bautizamos como “el Joan” y que, como resultado de la extrañísima conversación que tuvimos con él (no entendimos casi nada del monólogo de casi 10 minutos que nos soltó) suponemos que era el marido de “la Montse”, la extraña trabajadora social que conocimos en el Refugi de Biadós.
Volvimos al camino ya sobre las 12 del mediodía con un sol de justicia y un calor asfixiante. El sol quemaba y el suelo irradiaba mucho calor. En cuanto soplaba un poco de aire la sensación era de que alguien había abierto la puerta de un horno. En ocasiones costaba incluso respirar.
Nos encontramos con un par de excursionistas que estaban haciendo el GR11 en sentido opuesto al nuestro. Nosotros les advertimos sobre las orugas y ellos nos advirtieron sobre el agua: a partir de Albanyà las fuentes y riachuelos se habían secado hasta el final de la GR. Menudo panorama.
Avanzamos parándonos en las pocas sombras que encontrábamos y bebiendo agua y Aquarius. Cuando llegamos a Albanyà nos habíamos bebido entre los dos 4 litros de agua y 1,5 litros de Aquarius. La temperatura pasaba de 40 grados.
Llegamos hasta la plaza del pueblo y nos encontramos a Ernest, que ya había hecho averiguaciones sobre los autobuses que podrían sacarnos de la parrilla en la que se había convertido ese área. 
La montaña propiamente dicha, que es lo que nos gusta, ya se había acabado, igual que el agua de las fuentes. Esto, junto a la intensidad de la ola de calor, hacían que continuar fuese peligroso y muy aburrido y tedioso. Nos fuimos en autobús hasta Figueres (41 grados había ahí y nos pareció fresco comparado con el camino a Albanyà) y desde ahí hasta Vilamaniscle para así poder llegar caminando al día siguiente hasta el Mediterráneo.
En Vilamaniscle Ernest acampó en la piscina municipal y Marina y yo nos fuimos a la Casa de Colònies Tramuntana. Una casa en el punto más alto del pueblo con sitio para 64 personas en la que estuvimos nosotros solos.

We woke up with the sun, packed the tent (pretty much dry) and went to have breakfast to the tables in front of Sant Aniol church. There we found Ernest again! His sister Katy had to leave to Valencia the day before and he was back by himself. 
He told us that during the night the place turned into some kind of nightclub and a bunch of teenagers had been drinking and having a party until late. We had been really lucky with our camping spot. 
We finished our breakfast and got ready to fight the box tree moth worm. Again, I sacrificed myself for the team (so Enrique and Ernest) but soon Ernest took over because he’s nearly 2 metres tall and I am so short that he was getting the worms and webs in his face anyway. He show us his technique which is basically taking a light stick from the ground and walking at the same time as doing circular movements with the stick at about head hight. 
After we climbed up to 800 metres, the worms were gone as we had correctly been told. We arrived in Bassegoda Saddle (1102 m) where the landscape turned into the typically dry Mediterranean bush. 
At the same time we entered the sunny face of the mountain, during the heat wave. The trail was a wide forestal road with hardly any trees covering it, dusty and covered with loose rocks. 
We were descending at a fast pace towards Bassegoda hut when Enrique realised that he was missing the cover for his camera’s lens. Luckily, he had a rought idea about the place where it might still be. We found a shady spot where Enrique left his backpack and I stayed while he run back towards the saddle. 
On his way, he realised that there was a bend signed with the GR marks that we missed before. Then, he came back to let me know about the mistake and we both took the right way again. We guess that we were so bored in that hot rural road that it was hard to keep focus on the trail. Once on the right track, Enrique finally got back up to the saddle and retrieved the cover. 
When we were back together, a 4WD vehicle stopped and roll the window down. Enters in the story a gentleman who we gave the name of “Joan”. We experienced the weirdest “conversation” in the whole trail: he managed to speak for 10 minutes to us but we did not understand a single word. We nodded and smiled all the time to be polite. Then, we assume he was the husband of “Montse” who we met in Biadós hut. 
We went back to the trail when it was around 12 midday, under the baking sun and feeling the scorching hot temperatures of the Spanish August. The sun was burning our skin. The ground emitted heat. The few times when we felt a little breeze the feeling was the same as when you open the oven door. Even breathing was an effort. 
We met a few mountaineers following the GR11 in the opposite direction. We warned them about the box three moth worms and they warned us about the lack of water: from Albanyà to the end of the trail all the streams and natural fountains were dry. Not the best prospects. 
We kept going, stopping to drink water or Aquarius only when we found shady spots (we were now drinking from the reserve bottles as both our water bladders were now empty). When we got  to Albanyà we had drank a total of 4 litres of water and 1,5 litres of electrolytes. The temperature had been for sure over 40 degrees. 
In the only bar open in Albanyà we found Ernest who already knew how to get out of that hot frying pan. 
Water was gone, true mountains were gone and we were left with an historic heat wave. We decided that carrying on was just dangerous, boring, tedious and pointless hiking. We took, then, a bus to Figueres. It was 41 degrees hot there and we felt it as cooler than around Bassegoda. From Figueres, a local bus took us to Vilamaniscle. There’s also public transport from Figueres to Llançà and even Barcelona but we still wanted to reach de Mediterranean sea by foot on the next day. 
In Vilamaniscle, Ernest camped near the local swimming pool and Enrique and I went to Tramuntana House. This is a house at the highest point of the town to rent for youth camps. The views are truly pretty and its host Montse was friendly and helpful. The house fits 64 people but we were by ourselves. 
That night was so hot that we slept outside in our tent with no cover. But still, the heat was so intense that the temperatures hardly allowed us to close our eyes.
