(ENGLISH AHEAD) Ya habrá momentos para ilusionarse. Me guardo la emoción para más adelante. Hoy no es más que el día siguiente a ayer, no le demos mayor importancia. Dicen que los gimnasios hacen su agosto en enero, al ofrecer bonos descuento anuales para aquellos que quieren comenzar el año con el propósito de quitarse unos kilos y hacer ejercicio. Los fumadores eligen este día para tomar su definitiva decisión. Hasta mis alumnos me prometían antes de las vacaciones que el año que hoy empieza iban a estudiar de verdad.... en fin. Me parece que el primer día del año es el más triste de todos, el más cruel, el más siniestro, un Maquiavelo vestido de almanaque: todo el mundo diciendo que va a hacer lo que sabe que, a ciencia cierta, no va a hacer. Es la excusa perfecta para mentirse a sí mismo, pues si tanto deseas hacer algo, ¿para qué esperar al día de año nuevo?
Death Cab For Cutie acertaron con el este single del que es aclamado como su mejor disco hasta la fecha. Este tema preludia el propósito (esta vez sí conseguido) de convertirse en referencia del indie americano con una colección de canciones que navegan entre la decadencia y la tenue claridad, donde el brillo se asoma como rayos de sol entre las nubes de tormenta. La gracia está en que la tormenta ya ha pasado pero se intuye. Y ahí es donde reside la belleza, en el espacio entre los grises nubarrones que dejan entrever el pálido azul del cielo. The New Year es el principio del disco pero el final de la tormenta que ya no aparecerá en ningún otro corte. Es contundente, como cada golpe de guitarra, pero delicada, como la voz de Ben Gibbard cantando eso de "así que este el año nuevo, y yo no he hecho ningún propósito", el colmo del buen gusto hasta para decirte que no te hagas ilusiones mientras dices y haces lo que todo el mundo espera. It is said that gyms make a killing in January, offering discount year-vouchers for those who want to start the year with the purpose of losing some weight and exercising. Smokers choose this day to make their final decision. Even my students promised me before holidays that this year they will really study hard .... you see. I think the first day of the year is the saddest of all, the cruelest, the most sinister, Maquiavello in disguise: everybody says they are going to do what they know for sure that won't be done. It's the perfect excuse to lie to oneself, for if you really wish to do something, why wait till New Year's Day?Death Cab For Cutie succeeded with this single from their acclaimed best album to date. This track anticipates the resolution (this one greatly accomplished) to become the American indie reference with a collection of songs that navigate between decadence and dim lights, where brightness sticks out like sunrays through storm clouds. The thing is that the storm is over but it can be felt still present. And that's where the beauty lies, in the space between the grey clouds that hardly shows the pale blue sky. The New Year is the beginning of the album but the end of the storm, which no longer appears in any other track. It is resounding and severe, as each stroke of the guitar, but delicate, as the voice of Ben Gibbard singing "so this is the new year, and I have not made any purpose,"  the height of good taste even when it is to tell you not to look forward to anything while you're still saying and doing what everyone expects you to. No more, no less, than a reality bite (lyrics here).And I must go. I leave you and your hangover, today I'm taking up a daily jogging session ...
