Visita al glaciar perito moreno

El glaciar Perito Moreno se origina en el Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur y tiene un area de 250 km cuadrados (El glaciar Pío XI que está en Chile, justo al lado de donde vivimos, que  es el más grande de Sudamérica, tiene 1250 km cuadrados), con un frente de 5 km de ancho y una media de 60 m de altura sobre el agua del Lago Argentino. Como curiosidad nos gustaría destacar que, a diferencia con todos los glaciares que hemos visto en Canadá y Nueva Zelanda que están en estado de retroceso, el Perito Moreno está en estado de avance, por lo que cada día es más grande.
Así que después de quedarnos en el campamento AWASI la última vez que estuvimos de días libres ahora tocaba volver a la civilización. Ya teníamos pensado hacerlo pero cuando Nic, amigo nuestro de Canadá (él en realidad es de Alaska), nos confirmó que estaría por la Patagonia no lo dudamos y organizamos un road trip con él.
Quedamos en Puerto Natales, donde pasamos la noche en el Hostal Donde Kike, básicamente porque nos hizo gracia que el dueño fuese mi tocayo. Una vez en Puerto Natales organizamos la intendencia del viaje y yo me compré unas botas nuevas; las que tenía estaban tan rotas y gastadas que era un peligro utilizarlas (en el fondo es normal ya que con ellas he caminado por los Himalayas, los Alpes de Nueva Zelanda, las Rocosas Canadienses, la Vall de Núria y también por la Patagonia).
Al día siguiente cogimos el coche de alquiler y salimos hacia la frontera de Chile con Argentina, donde en el lado chileno hay huelga. Decidimos pasar por Dorotea, una frontera con ese nombre no puede ser seria, y tardamos un poquito, pero es básicamente porque aquí necesitan un papelito para casi todo y para pasar la frontera hubo que visitar tres ventanillas, firmar varios autógrafos y hacer un castell “3 de 9 amb folre i manilles” con sólo tres personas. 


Una vez pasada la frontera chilena condujimos 3 km y llegamos a la argentina, donde nos esperaba el perro de aduanas, el jefe del tinglado. Pasamos por su lado sin que se inmutase e hicimos los trámites para pasar a Argentina sin que ningún lugareño nos psicoanalizase, todo un logro. 

Antes de cruzar la frontera nos hicimos una foto delante del cartel que especifica que las Malvinas son argentinas, igual que Dios y el Papa. 

Después de pasar la frontera nos esperaban unas cuantas horas de conducción por las carreteras patagónicas, que están trazadas con tiralíneas. Rectas interminables que atraviesan la pampa infinita donde de vez en cuando se cruza un guanaco suicida. 


Llegamos al pueblo de El Calafate, que nos pareció muy bonito, y seguimos hacia nuestro destino: el Parque y Reserva Nacional Los Glaciares.


La entrada al parque cuesta 500 pesos argentinos aunque seas del Barça y fan de Messi, lo que equivalía a 30 euros el día que fuimos nosotros; con Argentina nunca se sabe cómo va el cambio de moneda, igual alguien va mañana y 500 pesos son 5 céntimos.


El Parque Nacional Los Glaciares se creó en el año 1937 y fue declarado Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1981. ¿Y qué hace famoso al parque? Pues el glaciar Perito Moreno, que es uno de los más pequeños (El Viedma y el Uppsala son mucho más grandes) pero sin duda el más accesible.

Desde la entrada del parque hasta el frente del glaciar hay 200 curvas en 31 km. Esto no lo contamos nosotros, nos lo dijo el chico argentino que nos cobró la entrada. 

Después de una de esas curvas hay un mirador en el que dejas el coche, subes unas escaleras y de repente ves por primera vez el Perito Moreno. La sorpresa es mayúscula porque, a pesar de haber ido hasta ahí precisamente a ver ese mastodonte de hielo, el espectáculo es imponente. Todos dimos un pequeño grito de sorpresa. ¿Cómo se llama el mirador? Pues se llama El Mirador de los Suspiros. Si es que aquí sí que saben poner nombre a las cosas.

Seguimos adelante hasta llegar al final de la carretera. Dejamos el coche en el aparcamiento y nos subimos a uno de los minibuses que te llevan hasta la parte de arriba de las pasarelas, justo en el punto más alto de la Península de Magallanes, que es el brazo de tierra contra el que choca el frente del glaciar.
Fuimos arriba y abajo de las pasarelas todo lo que quisimos y más. Al llegar por la tarde, a eso de las 15:30, todos los autobuses de turistas se estaban marchando ya así que estuvimos solos. Literalmente, ya que al final nos fuimos una hora después de que cerrasen el acceso.El glaciar se llama Perito Moreno en honor a Francisco Pascasio Moreno (1852-1919), que fue un científico, naturalista, conservacionista, geógrafo y político argentino cuyos principales trabajos y contribuciones fueron en La Patagonia. Esto lo ponemos aquí por si un día jugáis al Trivial y os lo preguntan. De nada.EL ORIGEN DEL CALAFATE (leyenda Selk’nam)
Los Selk’nam, que eran los habitantes de La Tierra del Fuego, se agrupaban en diferentes tribus. Dos de ellas, como suele ocurrir, estaban en permanente conflicto. El hijo del jefe de una de las tribus tenía por costumbre pasear por las llanuras de Tierra del Fuego y en una de sus caminatas se encontró con una chica de ojos negros profundos e intensos de la que se enamoró al instante. La chica también se enamoró de él, pero resultó ser la hija del jefe de la otra tribu, así que tenían que verse a escondidas. El brujo de la tribu de la chica los descubrió, pero entendió que jamás podría separarlos, así que condenó a la chica transformándola en una planta cuyos frutos negros conservan la belleza e intensidad de sus ojos pero que estaba rodeada de espinas, para que el chico no pudiese acercarse. Pero su amor era tan fuerte que el chico murió abrazado a la planta, el Calafate. Es por esto que hoy en día se dice que quien logre comer el fruto del arbusto Calafate estará destinado a volver a La Patagonia.

The glacier Perito Moreno belongs to the Southern Patagonian Ice field and it’s 250 square kilometres big (Pio XI glacier in Chile, located very close to where we live, is the biggest in South America and is 1250 square kilometres). Perito Moreno’s front is 5 km wide and 60 m high over Argentino Lake in average. As opposed to all the glaciers we’ve seen so far in New Zealand and Canada which are all of them backing up, this one gets bigger every day. 
After staying at Awasi camp the last time we had our set of days off, this time it was due to get down to the city. Besides, our friend Nic from Alaska (who we met in Lake Louise) was coming for those dates and we had organised this meeting for a long time. The plan was to take the chance to do a road trip to Argentina with him. 
We met with Nic in Puerto Natales, in the Hostel Donde Kike, because we like that the owner and Enrique have the same nickname (Kike is short for Enrique). We organise the last few bits and pieces in town like a new pair of boots for Enrique. Side note, the offer of sports gear in Natales is incredibly reduced. Yes, there’re many sports shops. No, there aren’t many makes to chose from  and are limited to Salomon and North Face and even less sizes. In most shops, what they have on the shelves you see is what they have available. Besides, the prices are higher than what you would pay in Canada or Europe, therefore, my personal tip is to come prepared from home with the right equipment. 
The next day we picked up the rental car we had organised (we did that in advanced, it takes a while to get the permit to travel to Argentina) and drove towards the border. There was meant to be a strike on the Chilean side and we decided to cross through Dorotea since it’s a quiet spot and a better road. Going through the Chilean border took a wee while but it was easy and not as confusing as I thought it would be. We only had to go to three different box offices and we didn’t  have to pay. 


After that, we drove 3 km and got to the Argentinian post ruled by a dog blocking the way. We walked past him with no trouble and did all the paperwork to enter the country. Surprisingly, we were let in without a local psychologist analysing us.

But the most important element of the customs building was the sing clearly marking that the  Islands of Malvinas belong to Argentina, likewise the Pope and God himself.  

After the border, we still had quite a long drive on Patagonic roads. Probably their designer only had a pencil and a ruler when planning their layout. They’re basically endless straight lines crossing the immensity of the pampas. Every now and then a guanaco decides to cross the road and attempt a suicide, that’s the only danger.  


We made it to El Calafate, which looked like a funky sweet town, and kept going to Los Glaciares National Park. 


The entry fee is 500 Argentinian Pesos for any foreigners, no matter where you are from or how much you love Messi and Barça. That was the equivalent to 30 euros on the day we visited but tomorrow it might just be 10 cents. 


This National Park was stablished in 1937 and declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981. The most famous and attractive feature is the popular glacier Perito Moreno. While being one of the smallest in size (Viedma and Upsala are way bigger) it’s probably the most accessible while impressive of the glaciers in the Southern Hemisphere. 

From the entry, the road has about 200 bends in 31 km. We did not count them, the Argentinian park guard told us. Another related or unrelated side note (you guys chose), Argentinians tend to exaggerate, like Andalusians. 

After one of those bends there’s a lookout where you can leave the car, climb some stairs and see the glacier for the very first time. Despite expecting a massive block of ice and no matter how many pictures you’ve seen of the glacier, the sight of the real feature takes your breath away. We all stayed speechless for a few seconds. That lookout it’s called Mirador de los Suspiros, which  is translated literally as Lookout of the sighs. We didn’t wonder about the reason. 

We drove up to the end of the road and left the car in the parking lot. From there, we took a short (and free) shuttle to the top of the boardwalk, at the highest point of the Magallanes Peninsula. This peninsula is the arm of land that the glacier hits perpendicularly from its front. 
We wondered around those board walks as much as we wanted and since it was late in the afternoon there weren’t many groups or crowds. The park closes the entry at 6 pm, we entered at about 3.30 pm and we stayed until about 7 pm. The name of Perito Moreno honours Mr. Francisco Pascasio Moreno (1852-1919), a scientist, naturalist, conservationist, geographer and politician from Argentina who worked and contributed mostly to Patagonia. We bet that piece of information will eventually come handy on a Trivia night. You’re welcome.   THE ORIGIN OF THE CALAFATE (a Selk’nam legend)The Selk’nam, the native people of Tierra del Fuego, were organised in different tribes. Two of them were in a constant fight, as usual in every territory. The son of the chief of one of this two tribes used to walk in the flat lands of Tierra del Fuego. During one of his walks he fall madly in love with a young girl with deep dark eyes. She matched his feelings but, as it turned out, she happened to be the other tribe’s chief’s daughter. Therefore, they had to keep their love in secret and meet furtively. The girl’s tribe wizard found out but at the same time he knew he could never split them apart. As a punishment, he turned the girl into a bush whose black berries keep the beauty and intensity of her eyes but that at the same time it’s covered with sharp prickles to detain her lover from getting close. However, their love was so strong that led him to die hugging that plant named Calafate. They say that whoever manages to eat the fruit of the Calafate is meant to come back to Patagonia.Enrique & Marina
