30 minutes with sonia carrasco

"Desde pequeñita me ha gustado diseñar" me cuenta Sonia Carrasco. Sonia es una joven diseñadora valenciana que tras finalizar sus estudios de moda en la IED, se convirtió en ganadora del primer premio del concurso MFSHOW LAB BY PANDORA, desde entonces no ha parado. A punto de presentar su tercera colección, y bajo la mira de grupos como LVMH, me siento con Sonia para que me hable de ella su trabajo y su experiencia como diseñadora. / "Since I was little girl I loved design", tells me Sonia Carrasco. Sonia is a young designer form Valencia, after finishing her studied of fashion at IED, she won the MFSHOW LAB BY PANDORA competiton, since then she hasn't stopped. Close to present her third collection and under the watchfu eye of fashion groups such as LVMH, I sit with Sonia to talk about her job and her experience as a designer.


¿Como nace Sonia Carrasco, la diseñadora? / How was born Sonia Carrasco, the designer?
Siempre me ha gustado diseñar, desde pequeñita. Empece con mi abuela tejiendo, y a partir de ahí algo despertó en mi, siempre me ha gustado la moda, y quería estudiar y dedicarme a ello. / I always love to designe, since I was little. I stated to knit with my grandmother, and thenafter something awakened in me, I have always love fashion, and I wanted to study and devote to it.

Pero estudiaste empresariales en un principio, ¿no? / But you went to business school at first, right?
Cuando termine el colegio, moda no era una carrera oficial, pero mi padre quería que estudiara algo oficial y luego hiciera lo que quisiera. De echo ahora doy las gracias por ello porque moda es una empresa, y me ha venido muy buen conocer una ciencia de economía. Eso si, por las tardes iba a clases de patronaje y confección. Cuando termine la carrera, me tome un año sabático para hacer cursos de moda e ilustración, estudie en Londres, en la Saint Martins, y luego en Valencia empece moda en la EASD y en segundo me vine a Madrid al IED. / When I finished school, fashion was not a official carrier, and my father wanted me to study something oficial, and then I could do what ever I wanted. In fact, now I am grateful for that because fashion is a business, and it has been very goof gor me to a scince of economics. In the evenings I went to pattern and sewing classes. When I graduate college I took a sabbatical year to attend to fashion and illustration classes, I studied at Saint Martins in London, and after that I started in Valencia at EASD, in the second year I came to Madrid, to studie at IED.
Tienes dos colecciones, hablame de ellas. / You have designed two collections, can you tell me about them. 
Bueno ahora tengo una tercera, que voy a presentar a principios de Mayo. Y si tengo la de Tesis, que eran cuatro looks, y luego esta que era la del concurso que se llama Facets of Young (Facetas de Juventud). De esta colección la inspiración es entre le mundo onírico, y el mundo real, esa frágil linea que une ambos mundos y lo quise trasmitir en las texturas, en los volúmenes, en el patronaje. / Well I do have a third collection, I am going to present it in early May. Yes, I have Tesis, that were four looks, then this one that was the one of the competition, and is named Facets of Young. In this collection the inspiration is between the oniric world versus real world that fragile line conecting both worlds and I wanted to transmit it in the textures, the volumes, the paters.
Facets of Young pertenece a la temporada Primavera-Verano 2015, y como tu has dicho es de estilo arquitectónico. / Facets of Young is for Spring-Summer 2015, and as you have said is architectonic style.


¿Como definirías tu trabajo? / How would you define your work?  
Me definiría como una moda contemporánea y femenina, siempre intento dar buenas formas. Ahora mismo quiero fusionar innovación y moda, que es la colección ultima que presentare ahora, en Mayo. / I would define my work as a contemporary and femenine fashion, I always try to give great paterns. Right now I want to fuse innovation and fashion, which is my last collection, the one I am going to present now, in May.
En los tejidos, ¿que es para ti fantasía? ¿y realidad? / In the fabric you use, what is fantasy? and what is reality?
Se trataba de tejidos super lisos con distintas texturas como pueden ser el blanco, el gris que son tejidos tecnológicos, y 100% acrílicos. Y luego tejidos mas vaporosos, como puede ser la gasa, o la lana, que da mucho juego como el equivalente al mundo onírico. / They are very smooth fabrics with diferent textures such as white or grey that are technological fabrics and 100% acrylic. And the most gauzy fabrics as gaze or wool, which gives place to the dream word.


¿Y los colores? ¿cuales son los colores de Facets of Young? / And the colors? Wich ones are Facets of Young colors?


Los colores principales son el blanco y el negro. Y luego quise incorporar mas color, porque es una coleccion de Primavera-Verano. Añadi como colores secundarios: el amarillo, el azul, el violeta, el teja y el crema, este ultimo, simplemente es un toque. / The main colors are black and white. I wanted to ad color, because is a Spring-Summer collection. I added as secondary tones: yellow, blue, violet, russet and cream, this last one is just a touch.

¿Que representa para ti la arquitectura? ¿y los volúmenes? / What architecture mean to you? And the volumes?
Para mi, el mundo de la arquitectura es un mundo que me inspira muchísimo, cualquier cosa: los edificios, las obras de arte,... Es un mundo que me atrae mucho. Representa que es algo que puedo plasmar muy bien en las prendas, juego mucho con las formas, con el patronaje, con superposiciones; me gusta mucho, creo que las superposiciones son un detalle importante en mi estilo. / The architectonic word inspires me a lot, anything: the buildings, art,... Is a world that attacks me a lot. It represent that is something I can capture very well in the clothing, I play a lot with the forms, with the pattern design, with the superpositions; I like them a lot, I thing superpositions are an important detail in my style. 



He leído que Dali te inspiro para esta colección Primavera-Verano 2015, ¿es así? / I have read that Dali had inspired you in this Spring-Summer 2015 collection, is that right?
Que va! Eso es un error, que lo publico alguien y se ha difundido. Simplemente le quise dar una referencia artística a la colección, y como mi inspiración era entre en mundo onírico-mundo real, lo asocie al surrealismo, y surrealismo, Dali. Pero no es que me inspirara en Dali. / Not at all! Is a mistake someone has publish it and it has disseminate. I always want it to give an artistic reference to the collection and due to my inspiration was about the oniric-real world, I did merge to the surrealism, and surrealism equal Dali. But I didn't get inspired in Dali.
La inspiración de esta colección fue al ver la película 8½ de Federico Fellini. En la peli analiza los tres niveles de la mente: el pasado, el presente y el condicional, siendo el condicional el mundo onírico. Y a partir de ahí, empece a crear. / The inspiration of this collection came when I watched the move 8½ by Federico Fellini. The movie analyze the three levels of the mind: past, present and conditional, be the conditional the oniric world. And from there I started to create.
Mi proceso creativo varia mucho, tengo un punto de partida, como es este caso, donde me inspire en la película de Fellini y de ahí creo mi propia historia. / My creative process change a lot, I have a start point, as this case that was Fellini's movie, and from there I start my own history. 
Valencia y el mar inspiraba a Sorolla, y ¿a ti que te inspira?
En la colección que voy a presentar ahora, es un manifiesto del mundo caótico, y la idea de que el caos siempre lo vemos como algo negativo pero realmente no es negativo, dentro del caos siempre hay un orden, es como buscar el orden dentro del caos. / Now, in the  collection I am about to present, is a manifest of a chaotic world, and the idea we always see chaos as something negative, inside the chaos there is order, is about how to find order inside chaos.
Pero me inspira cualquier cosa: la arquitectura, una película, una persona, un edificio, un puente... / I get inspired with anything: the architecture, a movie, a person, a buding, a bridge.
El mar me encanta, me inspira mucho, me inspira a mi misma. Pero todo depende de la situación en la que me encuentre, tiene que ver mucho con mi condición emocional. / I love the sea, it inspired me a lot, it inspired myself. All is up the situation I am into, it has much to do with me emotional situation.
¿Como es la mujer que viste Sonia Carrasco? / How is like the woman Sonia Carrasco dress?
Es un mujer contemporanea, con carácter, con personalidad que busca diferenciarse del resto. Es segura de si misma, y no tiene complejos. / Is a contemporary woman, strong, with personality that trys to be different from the rest. She is self-confidence and has no complex. 
¿A que mujer te gustaria vestir? / Which woman would you like to dress?
Hombre como gustar, me encantaria vestir a Rhianna. En parte porque desde ahi es un boom, porque es muy conocida a nivel mundial. / Well, I would love to see Rhianna wearing one of my creations. In part because from then is a boom, she is so well known worldwide.
Antes hemos hablado sobre los tonos que empleas en tu coleccion, que ibas desde los colores primarios a otros mas intensos pero ¿me pudes decir un color que identifique a Sonia Carrasco? / We have talked about the colours you have use for your collection, and how you went from the primer colors to more intensity ones, but can you tell me a color that identifies Sonia Carrasco?
El blanco, de echo yo cuando visto siempre juego con el blanco y negro. / White, when I dress I always play with black and white. 
Para esta Primavera ¿cual es tu prenda indispensable? / For this Spring, which is your must have piece?
El vestido babydoll de mi colección Facets of Young, un vestido que es mitad amarillo, mitad gris. / The babydoll dress of my collection Facets of Young, a dress that is half yello, half grey.

¿Cual es la herramienta para avanzar como diseñadora? ¿Si tuvieras que aconsejar a alguien que esta empezando como diseñador, o que su sueño es diseñar que le dirías? / What is the tool to advance as designer? If you would have to advice someone that is strated as designer or is dreaming with it, what would you tell him, or her?
La mejor herramienta son las ganas de trabajar, muchas ganas de trabajar, no rendirse y horas, horas y mucho esfuerzo. Todo lo que me esta pasando a mi no es porque si, llevo mis horas, mi trabajo, mi constancia. / The best tool are desire to work, a lot of desire to work, don't give up, and hours, hours and plenty of sacrifice. All that is happening to me is not for chance, it took my time, my work, my persistence.
Dime... un diseñador. / Tell me... a designer. 
Como diseñador refrente por lo que hizo y por lo que significo en su momento Alexander McQueen. Para mi es mi ídolo, supo encontrar su camino, innovaba muchísimo colección tras colección. / As a reference designer for what he did and what it meant at its time Alexander McQueen. He is my idol, I knew how to find his way, he innovete collection after collection.
Y luego como diseñador que ahora siga Alexander Wang, me gusta mucho y como trabaja para Balenciaga, o Ricardo Tisci. También me gustan mucho diseñadores de moda masculina como Tom Browne, Dion Lee, Jacquemus, son disenadores que estan empezando pero lleva un trayectioria de cuatro o cinco años, y es la trayectoria que yo quiero seguir. / And then as a designer I follow a lot Alexander Wang, I love his work and how he works for Balenciaga or Ricardo Tisci. I also like male fashion disigners such as Tom Browne, Dion Lee, Jacquemus, they are designer that are starting but have a career of four or five years, and is the career path I want to follow. 
Bueno quien sabe... puedes ser la siguiente J.W. Anderson, quien no nos dice que el año que viene te veamos en LVMH. ¿Porque no? / How knowns maybe you are the next J.W. Anderson, how tell us maybe next year you will be working for LVMH. Why not?
Soy positiva pero quiero tener los pies en el suelo. Soy bastante humilde, me comporto muy normal y eso que me estan pasando muchas cosas pero mi madre me crio asi, que nunca se me subiera nada. / I am positive but I want to keep my feets on the ground. I am pretty modest, I behave very normal even there is alot going on in my life but my mom touch me this way, to keep my feets on the ground. 
¿Cuales son tus siguientes pasos en el mundo de la moda? / Which are your next steps in the fashion industry?
Presentar mi ultima coleccion, que lo hago ahora en Mayo, por hacerlo un poco fuera del panorama de la moda que tenemos. Queria algo nuevo, algo alternativo, de echo no va a ser un desfile sino una performence, donde combino tecnologia y moda. A parte, esta coleccion nueva es una coleccion cortita, es una coleccion capsula de 8 looks, y realmente me encanta, es como mi bebe. Tengo mucha confianza en ella. / Present my last collection, now in May, I wanted to do it out of the fashion outlook we have. I wanted something new, something aleternative, in fact is not going to be a catwalk but a performence, where I mix tecnology and fashion. Beside, this new collection, is a short one, is a capsule collection of 8 looks, I love it, is like my baby. I have plenty of trust on it.
Esta misma coleccion la he presentado al concurso ITS, que es un concurso italiano de moda internacional, y estoy a la espera de que den los nombres de los finalistas. Estoy ansiosa, se presentan 4.600 candidatos pero ya vermos, nunca se sabe, en el de Louis Vuitton quede entre las 50, igual puedo quedar cercana. / I have presented this collection have entered in the ITS competition a international italian fashion contest, and I am waiting fot the names of the finalist. I am anxious, 4.600 candidates, will see, you never know, in the one of Louis Vuitton I ended up between the last 50, maybe this time I can get closer.
Y es eso, mi trayectoria a corto plazo es este concurso, luego estoy haciendo mi porfolio para buscar trabajo, eso si, sin limites, prefiero tirar por lo alto. Tambien me gustaria participar en mas concursos, ir presentando colecciones capsulas y asi darme a conocer y poner llegar en algun punto a ser directora creativa de una marca. / And that is, my short-term trajectory is this contest, I am also creating my portfolio to find a job, without limits, I rather set high standars. I would also like to participate in more competitions, to present capsule collections, is a good way to let people know me, and to be able to be at some point a creative director of a brand.
¿Donde se puede encontrar una prenda de Sonia Carrasco? / Where can the public find a design by Sonia Carrasco?
Esta coleccion (Facets of Young) no la pudo vender porque pertenece al concurso, y no puedo comercializar con ella pero si que quiero empezar a vender un poco. Pero en esta nueva, esta que presento, si que quiero probar a vender, y ver cual es el feedback de la gente. / I can't sell this collection (Facets of Young) because is part of the competition, I can commercialize with it but I want to start to sell. The new collection, I am about to present, I want to try to seel it and see the people's feedback.
Hare producciones pequeñas y conforme vea que se va vendiendo ire ampliando.  No lo descarto, me gustaria hacer una marca mas consolidada. / I would do small productions and according if they work I would start expanded. I don't rule it, I would like to make a more established brand.
