
A Large number of alto men – and tenor men and trumpeters and trombonists too – have tried to take wing and fly on the power, pulse, and patterns provided by Bird. Most of them have never gotten off the ground. On of the few who has succeeded is Sonny Stitt, and succeeded not only in following the commanding leader of modern jazz, but also in creating a musical personality of his own while doing so.There is no doubt about the great shadow thats falls across these performances, and all others Sonny Stitt has recorded. But utterly unlike most shadows, Charlie Parker’s does not darken ; it casts light, it makes life – or at least jazz life – easier. And if that is contrary to normal procedures – well, so was almost everything that Bird did with his instrument and his music to make his influence so beneficient…
