Blade Runner 2049

Falta poco para poder ver la secuela de Blade Runner. La verdad es que yo me he apartado voluntariamente de cualquier opinión o comentario sobre ella hasta ahora. La especulación durante tantos meses me aburría y mucho. ¿Era necesaria esta nueva versión? ¿Responderá a alguna pregunta que no sepamos ya? ¿Estará a la altura de las expectativas de los fans?

Cuando hablo de fans, me refiero a quienes llevamos más de 30 años siguiendo las diferentes versiones y ediciones de la película, sus bandas sonoras, el libro original, los guiones, los props (atrezzo), y todo el vasto número de materiales que hay alrededor de la misma. Y eso que nunca ha existido material oficial de merchandising, por ejemplo. Se ha estudiado la película hasta la saciedad, no ya desde el punto de vista cinematográfico o social, ni siquiera de las implicaciones morales de la historia. Hablo de estudiarla fotograma por fotograma, buscando el más ínfimo detalle para confirmar una opinión, para encontrar un elemento del atrezzo, etc. Hay más de un millón de fotogramas repartidos entres los 5 discos de la edición múltiple aparecida en 2007. ¡Más de un millón! Entre la release original, el montaje del director, el montaje final, la copia d trabajo y los extras, si, efectivamente, son más de un millón. Y lo se porque en su momento tuve mi ordenador trabajando más de una semana sin parar para extraerlos todos.

El objetivo era disponer de todos ellos para poder estudiarlos sin tener que hacer pausas imposibles entre un par de segundos de vídeo. Así, cualquier fotograma está disponible. ¿Obsesión? No, no, yo le llamo exactitud. Hay detalles y piezas que no aparecen ni un segundo en la película… ¿Nos interesa hasta este nivel? Pues, si. Algunos no tenemos nada más que hacer que encontrar 10 pies al gato…

Blade Runner 2049 dudo que llegue a estos niveles entre este grupo de fans acérrimos. Ni de lejos. Me gustaría equivocarme, claro. La fe mueve montañas, sin embargo en este caso no se dan las condiciones ideales. No la dirige Scott, aunque participa en la producción. La banda sonora no la ha compuesto Vangelis. Deckard aparece viejo, cuando se supone que es un replicante (sig) y han pasado más de 30 años (¿cómo se explica eso?). Y la imagen que hemos podido ver en algunos trailers no se corresponde con la atmósfera creada por Scott en los 80. Está claro que el cine ha evolucionado y la tecnología también. Creo que un esfuerzo por mantener esa apariencia oscura y melancólica no debería pasar, a priori, por efectos especiales computerizados, si no todo hecho “a mano”. Quizás me equivoco. Hasta que no la vea no me aventuraré a hacer más juicios.

La otra parte que no me convence, también de salida, es el reparto. Gosling tiene muy poca expresividad. Ana de Armas, bien, muy bonita, tal vez debería darle un poco más de crédito y no hacer lo mismo que Ford con Sean Young en su día. Jared Leto, para qué voy a decir nada. ¿Y Batista? Dios… nunca podrá tener el carisma de un actor, y menos de uno como Brion James, “el armario” de Blade Runner. Todos tienen mucho que demostrar para ser dignos herederos de una cult-movie como Blade Runner.

Diría que todo está un poco en contra para que me llame mucho la atención. Suelo ver Blade Runner, en cualquier edición, al menos un par o tres de veces al año. Y escuchar su banda sonora otras tantas, quizás más. Así que convencerme para que valore esta nueva visión del mundo replicante de una forma positiva, no es fácil. Falta poco.

La verdad es que me hace más ilusión poder ver cuanto antes el Montaje Final en 4K, o UltraHD. Ya está en mi poder. Sólo falta el reproductor adecuado para poder disfrutarla en 55″ y en su máxima calidad. Espero que será pronto.

There is little left to see the sequel to Blade Runner. The truth is that I have voluntarily departed from any opinion or comment on it until now. Speculation for so many months was boring me a lot. Was this new version needed? Will answer any questions we do not already know? Will it live up to the expectations of the fans?

When I talk about fans, I mean those who have been following the different versions and editions of the film, their soundtracks, the original book, the scripts, the props, and all the vast number of materials around it. And that has never been official merchandising material, for example. The film has been studied to the full, not from the cinematographic or social point of view, nor even from the moral implications of history. I speak of studying it frame by frame, looking for the smallest detail to confirm an opinion, to find an element of the props, etc. There are more than one million frames distributed among the 5 discs of the multiple edition appeared in 2007. More than a million! Between the original release, the director’s editing, the final editing, the copy work and the extras, yes, indeed, they are more than a million. And I know because at the time I had my computer working more than a week without stopping to extract them all.

The goal was to have all of them to study them without having to make impossible pauses between a couple of seconds of video. Thus, any frame is available. Obsession? No, no, I call it accuracy. There are details and pieces that do not appear even a second in the film … Are we interested up to this level? You are right. Some have nothing more to do than find 10 feet to cat …

Blade Runner 2049 I doubt it reaches these levels among this group of staunch fans. I would like to be wrong, of course. Faith moves mountains, however in this case do not give the ideal conditions. Scott does not direct it, although it participates in the production. The soundtrack was not composed by Vangelis. Deckard appears old, when he is supposed to be a replicant (sig) and have passed over 30 years (how do you explain that?). And the image we have seen in some trailers does not correspond to the atmosphere created by Scott in the 80’s. It is clear that the cinema has evolved and technology as well. I think that an effort to maintain that dark and melancholy appearance should not happen, a priori, by computerized special effects, if not all done “by hand.” Maybe I’m wrong. Until I see it, I will not venture to make any more judgments.

The other part that does not convince me, also of exit, is the cast. Gosling has very little expressiveness. Ana de Armas, well, very pretty, maybe I should give her a bit more credit and not do the same thing as Ford with Sean Young. Jared Leto, why should I say anything. And Batista? God … can never have the charisma of an actor, and less one like Brion James, “the giant” of Blade Runner. Everyone has a lot to prove to be worthy to a cult-movie like Blade Runner.

I would say that everything is a bit against for me to draw much attention. I usually see Blade Runner, in any edition, at least a couple or three times a year. And listen to your soundtrack as many, maybe more. So convincing me to value this new view of the replicating world in a positive way is not easy. Almost there.

The truth is that it makes me more excited to be able to see the Final Cut in 4K, or UltraHD as soon as possible. It is already in my hands. Only the right player is missing to be able to enjoy it in 55 “and in its highest quality. I hope it will be soon.
