Blade Runner 2049

Finalmente la ví. Dos horas y cuarenta minutos. Demasiado larga. Demasiado lenta. Una producción impresionante, hay que reconocerlo, pero con pausas innecesarias, planos inacabables que alargan de forma somnolienta una secuela que podía haber sido mucho más interesante. Sin ánimo de hacer spoilers, mi comentario tiene que ser, a la fuerza, generalista. Y tras 35 años a la espera (?) de una segunda parte, nos dan un argumento que bien podía haberse resuelto en un par de horas sin problema alguno.

El casting ha sido desde que se dieron los nombres de actores y actrices, una incógnita. Protagonizada por el actor con menos expresividad que conozco, aquí quizás puedo darle un voto de confianza. Su papel tampoco daba para mucha expresión, quizás un poco, pero no mucho más. Gosling está decente. En cuanto al resto, Ana de Armas sorprende, porque a pesar de su juventud no defrauda en su papel de chica de entretenimiento, aunque sea virtual. Robin Wright se lleva el papel serio, quizás más propio para otra actriz. Lo resuelve, sin más. Jared Leto tiene un papel que podría haber interpretado cualquiera, nada de especial. Y poco aprovechado su personaje. De las desconocidas, al menos para mí, Mackenzie Davis no pasa de ser un personaje secundario, tal vez incluso prescindible. ¿Qué decir de Batista? Esperaba más. No de él, si no de su personaje, sin dar más pistas. Una réplica de Lion daba para mucho más. Silvia Hoeks se lleva la palma. Casi se convierte en la protagonista, imprimiendo un fuerte carácter, diría que casi al nivel de un Roy Batty femenino.

De Harrison Ford, bien, es un elemento metido con calzador y que me recuerda a su último papel como Han Solo. Tan mayor como él, y un poco más aprovechado, sin estridencias. Deckard tenía que aparecer sí o sí. Lo ha hecho. Nada más.

Otros actores realizan sus cameos correspondientes dando pinceladas orientadas a quienes seguimos la película original desde hace décadas. Para las nuevas generaciones esas apariciones apenas tendrán sentido alguno.

Hablemos de la ambientación, de los efectos especiales, de esa atmósfera opresiva. Acepto que está conseguido todo ello, con espectaculares plano y animación gráfica exquisita en buena parte de los casos. La banda sonora funciona en esos planos que entran de improvisto y aturden un tanto al espectador, relegando su papel a puro acompañamiento sonoro, jamás musical. Basta con intentar escucharla sin ver la película. Es prácticamente imposible. Tediosa por decirlo suavemente. Incomparable con lo peor que haya hecho Vangelis en su dilatada carrera. Como digo, funciona sólo como simbiosis de la acción, nada más.

Otro detalle que no me gustó nada son los títulos de entrada, la introducción, a modo de la clásica, que nos explica qué son los replicantes y demás. El tamaño del texto es minúsculo, incluso para una gran pantalla de cine. Es muy mejorable, y deseable, puesto que introduce al espectador en una historia que si no conoce de antemano le será un poco difícil entender los conceptos clave.

Quizás la duración extrema de la película está hecha a posta para que este último punto no sea un contratiempo, y asimismo de tiempo a entender de qué estamos hablando. Es complicado no desvelar nada para quienes no la hayan visto y seguir un comentario más a fondo. Eso vendrá más adelante, cuando ya no esté en cartelera, cuando aparezca en medios de consumo y ya “todo el mundo” la haya visto.

Mientras tanto, me quedo con resumir que es lenta, larga y quizás, sólo quizás, podría haber sido mejor secuela con un poco de atención a esos dos puntos.

Finally I watch it. Two hours and forty minutes. Too long. Too slow. An impressive production, I must admit, but with unnecessary pauses, endless planes that lengthen sleepily a sequel that could have been much more interesting. Without spoilers, my comment must be, by force, generalist. And after 35 years waiting (?) for a second part, they give us an argument that could well have been resolved in a couple of hours without any problem.

The casting has been since the names of actors and actresses were given, a mistery. Starring the less expressive actor I know, here maybe I can give him a vote of confidence. His role also did not give much expression, perhaps a little, but not much more. Gosling is decent. As for the rest, Ana de Armas surprises, because despite her youth does not disappoint in her role as entertainment girl, even virtual. Robin Wright takes the role seriously, perhaps more appropriate for another actress. He solves it, no more. Jared Leto has a role that could have played anybody, nothing special. And little used his character. Of the unknown, at least for me, Mackenzie Davis is no more than a secondary character, perhaps even expendable. What about Batista? I expected more. Not of him, if not of his character, without giving more clues. A replica of Lion gave for much more. Silvia Hoeks do it well. Almost becomes the protagonist, impressing with a strong character, I would say almost to the level of a female Batty Roy.

From Harrison Ford, well, it’s an element with a shoehorn that reminds me of his last role as Han Solo. He was as old as he was, and a little more profiteer, no stridencies. Deckard had to appear yes or yes. It has done. Nothing else.

Other actors make their cameos corresponding giving brushstrokes oriented to those who follow the original film for decades. For the new generations these apparitions will have little meaning.

Let’s talk about the setting, the special effects, the oppressive atmosphere. I accept that all this is achieved, with spectacular and exquisite graphic animation in most cases. The soundtrack works on those planes that enter unexpectedly and stun the viewer somewhat, relegating their role to pure sound, never musical accompaniment. Just try to listen to it without watching the movie. It is practically impossible. Tedious to put it mildly. Incomparable with the worst that Vangelis has done in his long career. As I say, it works only as a symbiosis of action, nothing more.

Another detail that I did not like anything are the entry titles, the introduction, as the classic, which explains what are the replicants and others. The text size is tiny, even for a large movie screen. It must be much improved, and desirable, since it introduces the viewer into a story that if you do not know in advance it will be a bit difficult to understand the key concepts.

Perhaps the extreme duration of the film is set for the last point is not a setback, and also gives the time to understand what we are talking about. It is difficult not to reveal anything for those who have not seen it and to follow a more in-depth commentary. That will come later, when it is no longer on the billboard, when it appears in means of consumption and already “everyone” has seen it.

Meanwhile, I’ll just summarize that it’s slow, long and maybe, just maybe, it could have been a better sequel with a little attention to those two points.
