Y para cerrar la semana vamos con una agrupación brasilera que siempre me ha parecido injustamente desconocida. Desde Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, presentamos a una banda que ha ganado premios, que ha tocado teloneando bandas internacionales del calibre de Focus y Il Baleto Di Bronzo, y considerados los Jethro Tull brasileros, aunque su música referencia tanto música de dicha banda, ambientes a lo Pink Floyd, música medieval y celta y con otros sonidos étnicos. Aquí, revivimos una joyita para que disfruten mucha buena música en este fin de semana que recién comienza. Para que no nos extrañen hasta el lunes, donde volveremos con la presentación de más discos, de más música, y las mismas ganas de romper las pelotas de siempre. ¡Muy recomendado!

Calix me parece un interesantísimo proyecto, de lo más contundente que ha venido del Brasil, un grupo que es importante descubrir, con mucha personalidad en lo que hacen y mucho profesionalismo. Desde Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, ellos intentan crear una música que tengan que ver con su paisaje cultural y su música popular pero también los relacionan con algunas de las mejores cosas de la tradición del rock progresivo (desde Jethro Tull hasta Pink Floyd), con canciones con elementos de música celta que pueden ser épicas o intimistas, pero siempre cálidas y de un excelente nivel.
Y es medio extraño el círculo que han trazado a lo largo de su carrera, digo porque en su momento fue una de las bandas más importantes de la nueva escena musical brasileña, tanto como una banda de rock como la música popular, y sin embargo tienen poco reconocimiento a nivel nacional hablando de Brasil, a pesar de recibir varios premios relacionados con el rock progresivo, de haber tocado junto a bandas como Focus y Il Baleto Di Bronzo, de que se hayan destacado en numerosos festivales como una de las mejores bandas del país, de que ha vendido más de 10.000 copias de sus dos álbumes, de que en Belo Horizonte, donde surgió la banda, el grupo vende todas las entradas para sus shows (miren los videos en vivo, no me dejan mentir). A pesar de eso, todavía no se la considera una banda "popular" en Brasil. Y sin embargo, cuando se trata de la escena internacional, la historia cambia. Considerados los "Jethro Tull brasileños" y ventas de sus discos en toda Europa, han alcanzado el reconocimiento ahí donde pudieron ser conocidos.
Y como es innegable la influencia de Jethro Tull en su sonido, acá los tenemos en una de vieja presentación, donde justamente tocan un tema de Jethro Tull.
Y no solo por el trabajo de la flauta se relacionan con la banda del señor Ian Anderson, ya que en sus canciones también incluyen con frecuencia instrumentos no tradicionales para el rock como la mandolina y el sitar y hablan en algunas letras de la fantasía épica medieval, aunque en los solos de guitarra se emparenten más con el estilo de David Gilmour.
Y por suerte cantan en portugués. Tiene un nivel muy alto en su comienzo y luego comienza a decaer de a poco, pero el resultado general es más que recomendable, y disfrutable.
Este fue el primer disco de esta banda, muy buena ópera prima, por cierto. Por supuesto, luego harían trabajos superadores, pero ésta no deja de ser una joyita.
Tampoco tengo muchos comentarios del álbum que estén en castellano, creo que ninguno en realidad, dejo algunos comentarios publicados en Progarchives:
"Canções de Beurin" can be considered a true masterpiece. It is the first album of this band from the independent music scene of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, but it's not the impression you take listening to it. Amazing arrangements, incredible flute and guitar solos, and the use of many instruments is what you get in this great progressive folk- rock album. There's a clear influence of Jethro Tull there, but Calix achieved to create its own style.rockfella
All the musicians are great, but 2 of them are really impressive: the lead singer Renato Savassi, who also plays mandolin, acoustic guitar and flute, and the guitar player Sânzio Brandão.
The album has 12 wonderful tracks, most of them composed by the band, except "Kian", a song from another Brazilian Prog Rock band, Sagrado Coração da Terra, and a great version of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana".
Brasil has an impressive musical tradition (folk and classic) and a good taste for rock and prog. This culminates in great bands like Bacamarte and Sagrado. Calix is a lesser known group but they have made a good album entitled "Cancoes de Beurin" (13 songs). The first track is a fine one: very melodic and lush with omnipresent play on the flute along vocal harmonies, mandolin and sensitive piano. The final part contains a beautiful guitarsolo. The other songs also sound pleasant, varied and elaborated. They features references from Pink Floyd (Gilmourian guitar), Jethro Tull (flute work like Ian Anderson), Marillion, Dire Straits and Queen but Calix keeps an own face: up-tempo rock with swirling flute and fiery guitar in "Alem do vento" and "No more whispers", R&R with slide-guitar in "Novidades", mandolin, flute and tablas in "Pra hoje um sol", straight rock with heavy guitar, organ and flute in "Nao se lembram do que sao" or powerful Hammond organ and fiery electric guitar in "Lancas". The version from Carls Off his famous piece "Carmina Burana" (entitled "O fortuna") is strong featuring ominous piano and a bombastic choir sound. 01. Dança Com Devas The flute of the beginning near the mandolin and everything more warns knell that begins. The vocal ones of Reborn one are very good and the best of everything . in Portuguese. The refrain is captivating and quite 'obscure', it gets a beating thinking who is Have to . After a more calm part the letter contudente does effect again on the minds, the instrumental thing is completed. Distinction for the beautiful ground of guitar of Sânzio, and the beautiful parts intrumentais of the band, principally flutes. The cither in the end is completed to the tone of the song.Diego Camargo
02. Além Do Vento The beginning is already promising with the band doing conventions and with Marcelo's bass when one of Geddy Lee is giving (laughters), the vocal melody of the verses is sensational, the vocalizations, the letter. What a good music! The 'straight' part of the verse contrasts perfectly with the conventions principally of flute, Rufino's keyboards, bass and André's battery. It trims with one undoubtedly with international easy transport, much better than great band of the 70 years cultuada.
03. No More Whispers The riff is well a Rock and roll (the guitar in this track is), the vocal in English, by the way the only ones of the disc, are not bad, far from that, the charm is just they they sing in Portuguese. Of the way for front they surprise us with a reggae with flute and completely (laughters)
04. Kian Quite serious noisy, low guitar, the flutes in an incessant one to sing. This song has a strange letter (I do not know well which the language) written by the Marcus Vianna (the own thing), this track has a sonority 80's, nothing that discredits the final product.
05. Canções De Beurin An instrumental acoustic perfect section, the climate is completed, the letter is marvellous. Section of pianos also completed. Summarizing to the best of the disc and to miss out the best music already written this way, without exaggerations.
06. O Sonho After a furious introduction of completely broken piano, a guitarrinha goes flat without stopping, and the base completely pop (in the good sense of the thing) is very good. One almost ground of bass well soul takes the band to ground of guitar, which to vary is very quite tipsy.
07. Novidades Piano and flute give the base for a well withdrawn bass, a percussion of light one and the duplicated vocal ones. Sensational letter, pianos more still. And captivating and clever refrain in his words. The band in general writes very well (I am not sure of the one who is the composer himself of the letters, but the credits are in the txt of the letters near the archive).
08. Pra Hoje Um Sol The percussion is an oriental influence certainly, I think what Moroccan. Meanwhile the flutes and pianos do a melodious bed for the vocal thing. In the general one a simple song.
09. Águas Man! This piano is sensational, soon a sound of waters running, and the guitar repeating the piano. When the vocal thing enters it gives me the impression of which he is aso feet of a river singing for the nature. The bass is sensational in the second part, next to those guitars typical 'Echoes' of David Gilmour. The second part is a total Wine glass! It is the sound itself of the band (that is difficult a band to get right away), a mixture of Jethro Tull with a very little of Genesis and Camel, but with guitars more rock, heavier. The letters are all sensationally very well writings and the very quite sung melodies. The band has that progressive sound that I adore what is that part of the music where all the instruments touch the same thing in unison. Very good!
10. Não Se Lembram Do Que São The guitar totally Rock and the flutes give a giant contrast, still more when the two make everything joined. Again the vocal melody perfectly well fitted in the melody of the music and with the chosen words. Another distinction of the band there are the vocal ones duplicated now by the singer himself Renato, it prays for his two 'bit players' of voice Marcelo and Rufino.
11. Lanças You launch, it has a keyboard that remembers Floyd in the tin, but in pursuances a few sounds of cither enter and we think that it the question is other one with oriental influence. That it swims! Joyful mistake. It is prog/Rock instrumental of the good ones, with the band entering with great easiness for many changes of time and without losing one's momentum.
12. O Fortuna (Carmina Burana) A Sensational and surprising version of one of the acts of the opera Carmin Burana (of Carl Orff). You certainly know this act, but certainly if surpreenserão with the musicality of the group.
Calix is a five-piece band originating from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Members of the band include Renato Savassi (Flute and lead vocals), Marcelo Cioglia (Bass), Sanzio Brandao (Guitar), Andre Godoy (Drums), and Rufino Silverio (Keyboards). Recorded between August 1999 and January 2000, Cancoes De Beurin features twelve tracks, ten of which are original compositions of the band.KP
Cancoes De Beurin is an interesting CD to me. My experience in listening to Brazilian progressive rock is based on the Symphonic bands like Bacamarte, Blezqi Zatsaz, O’ Terco, Quantum II and the various works by Marcus Viana. Cancoes De Beurin is totally different in that it doesn’t use the symphonic approach by the above bands, but is more similar to some English, French and Italian progressive rock bands.
My first impression of the music was that these guys are very accomplished musicians with a good grasp of melody and tempo. Flute plays prominently in most of the songs, and while thoughts of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull come to mind, the music is very dissimilar. I must admit I am not a huge Tull fan and flute playing doesn’t do much for me in the rock context, but I do like the melody and countermelody of Renato Savassi’s flute playing on this CD. As a rock band, Calix is on the light to medium side with limited guitar and keyboard solos. The band's strength is in composition and structure.
Highlights of the CD are "Alem do Vento," which features great flute and keyboard melodies and a very nice rock beat. This song has elements of IQ and Camel written all over it and represents the main single of the CD. "Kian," one of the non-original songs by the group features lyrics and music by Marcos Viana. It is also a very nice song, which features very nice flute and guitar solos. My favorite track is the title track. It starts with piano and acoustic guitar melodies with vocals joining soon after. These beautiful melodies continue throughout most of the song. Towards the end of the song, the vocals take on a more emotional tone and the drums and guitar pick up the beat. The song concludes with a great, emotional guitar solo reminiscent of Nick Barrett of Pendragon and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Very nice. The other songs on the CD have many of the same elements of the above listed highlights and also feature interesting native and exotic instruments, including the Indian Tambura.
Calix can't really be classified as a full-fledged progressive rock band, as they tend to flip-flop between pop and more progressive rock styles. I would however, recommend this CD to progressive rock fans who want a different musical experience. This is good music by good musicians.
1. Dança Com Devas: A flauta do começo junto ao bandolim e tudo o mais avisa dobre o que está começando. Os vocais de Renato são muito bons e o melhor de tudo… em português. O refrão é cativante e bem ‘obscuro’, leva a pensar quem é Devas… Depois de uma parte mais calma a letra contudente volta a fazer efeito sobre as mentes, o instrumental é perfeito. Destaque para o belo solo de guitarra de Sânzio, e as belas partes intrumentais da banda, principalmente flautas. A cítara no final é perfeita ao tom da canção.Diego Camargo
2. Além Do Vento: O começo já é promissor com a banda fazendo convenções e com o baixo de Marcelo dando uma de Geddy Lee (risos), a melodia vocal dos versos é sensacional, as vocalizações, a letra. Que música boa! A parte ‘reta’ do verso contrasta perfeitamente com as convenções principalmente de flauta, os teclados de Rufino, baixo e a bateria de André. Uma banda sem dúvida com porte internacional fácil, Muitas vezes melhor do que muita banda dos anos 70 cultuada.
3. No More Whispers: O riff é bem Rock And Roll (a guitarra nessa faixa é), os vocais em inglês, por sinal os únicos do disco, não são ruins, longe disso, o charme é justamente eles cantarem em português. Do meio pra frente nos surpreendem com um reggae com flauta e tudo (risos)
4. Kian: Guitarra barulhenta, baixo bem grave, as flautas num incessante cantar. Essa faixa tem uma estranha letra (não sei bem qual o idioma) escrita pelo Marcus Vianna (o próprio), essa faixa tem uma sonoridade 80's, nada que desabone o produto final.
5. Canções De Beurin: Uma seção instrumental acústica perfeita, o clima é perfeito, a letra é maravilhosa. Seção de pianos também perfeita. Resumindo a melhor do disco e se bobear a melhor música já escrita por aqui, sem exageros.
6. O Sonho: Depois de uma puta introdução de piano todo quebrado, uma guitarrinha sola sem parar, e a base toda pop (no bom sentido da coisa) é muito boa. Um quase solo de baixo bem soul leva a banda pro solo de guitarra, que pra variar é muito bem tocado.
7. Novidades: Piano e flauta dão a base para um baixo bem sacado, uma percussão de leve e os vocais duplicados. Letra sensacional, pianos mais ainda. E refrão cativante e bem bolado nas suas palavras. A banda em geral escreve muito bem suas letras.
8. Pra Hoje Um Sol: A percussão é influência oriental com certeza, acho que marroquina. Enquanto isso as flautas e pianos fazem uma cama melodiosa para o vocal. No geral uma canção singela.
9. Águas: Cara! Esse piano é sensacional, logo em seguida som de águas correndo, e a guitarra repetindo o piano. Quando o vocal entra me dá a impressão de que ele está aso pés de um rio cantando para a natureza. O baixo é sensacional na segunda parte, junto daquelas guitarras ‘Echoes’ típicas do David Gilmour. A segunda parte é Cálix total! É o som da banda mesmo (o que é difícil uma banda conseguir logo de cara), uma mistura de Jethro Tull com um pouquinho de Genesis e Camel, mas com guitarras mais rock, mais pesadas. As letras são todas sensacionalmente muito bem escritas e as melodias muito bem cantadas. A banda tem aquele som progressivo que eu adoro que é aquela parte da música onde todos os instrumentos tocam o mesmo em uníssono. Muito bom!
10. Não Se Lembram Do Que São: A guitarra totalmente Rock e as flautas dão um contraste gigante, ainda mais quando as duas fazem tudo junto. Mais uma vez a melodia vocal perfeitamente bem encaixada na melodia da música e com as palavras escolhidas. Outro destaque da banda são os vocais duplicados ora pelo próprio vocalista Renato, ora pelos seus dois ‘comparsas’ de voz Marcelo e Rufino.
11. Lanças: Lanças, tem um teclado que lembra o Floyd na lata, mas em seguidas entram uns sons de cítara e achamos que se trata de outra com influência oriental. Que nada! Ledo engano. É prog/Rock instrumental dos bons, com a banda entrando com muita facilidade por muitas mudanças de tempo e sem perder o pique.
12. O Fortuna (Carmina Burana): Uma Sensacional e surpreendente versão de um dos atos da ópera Carmin Burana (de Carl Orff). Vocês com certeza conhecem esse ato, mas com certeza se surpreenserão com a musicalidade do grupo.
Vocais, bateria, flauta, teclado, guitarra, baixo, violões, bandolim, música que faz sonhar, sentir o som na pele, sentir o som percorrendo o corpo, viajar. Poesia. Assim é o Cálix. Música de excelente qualidade que conquista jovens almas, rejuvenesce almas, resgata a sonoridade, pela canção, pela melodia.Glumim
Com 10 anos de carreira, o Calix é uma das bandas independentes de maior importância do nosso país, tendo vendido mais de 10 mil cópias de seus de seus 2 cds: “Canções de Beurin”, lançado em 2000 e “A Roda”, lançado em 2002. Considerado um grupo de rock progressivo, o Calix recebeu importantes prêmios relacionados a esse gênero (como o de banda revelação, melhor cd e melhor show nacional de 2000), tendo tocado ao lado do Focus, uma das bandas mais significativas na história do rock progressivo mundial e no Rio Art Rock Festival (Rio de Janeiro), ao lado do grupo italiano “Il Baleto Di Bronzo”. Nesse material audio visual de altíssima qualidade é possível constatar como a banda consegue levar o público ao delírio com sua música mágica que resgata a qualidade das harmonias e melodias de tempos mais fecundos, através de um instrumental rico e variado (flauta, violões, bandolim, guitarra, baixo, bateria, piano) e um vocal de alto nível. As 1700 pessoas que lotaram o teatro, cantam a plenos pulmões as músicas do grupo, que já recebeu também reconhecimento internacional, com cds distribuidos na Europa, Ásia, America Latina, Estados Unidos.
O DVD “Cálix Ao Vivo”, lançado em junho de 2007, foi produzido por Ivan Caiafa e dirigido por Daniel Veloso e Eduardo Zunza.

Me falta revivir sus otros álbums, todos los trabajos el grupos demuestra su gran nivel, y sobretodo su buen gusto y ganas de hacer una bella música. Los tipos forman un grupazo, si no los conocen, estaría bueno que lo hagan.
