Ciegos al cambio. Blind to change. 盲目改變

El futuro está velado a los mortales. Hay un abismo negro que impide su visión. La desgracia vence sin embargo cuando esta ceguera invade el presente continuo y los seres humanos pierden la facultad de discriminar y de entender.

Un tiempo de bonanza puede trocar rápidamente en uno de catástrofe cuando la bruma de la indecisión, el bloqueo y la falta de criterio llena con sus paños opacos la intemperie. Y es la mala noticia que tenía que anunciarles: eso de ahí fuera es niebla densa.  La paradoja es que algunos sí pueden ver a través de esa nube, concretamente los chino parlantes. La manera más sencilla de explicarlo tiene que ver con los verbos ya que son ellos los responsables de expresar la acción en relación al tiempo. En los idiomas europeos los verbos se conjugan para adaptarse a una amplia gama de tiempos verbales, eso permite que podamos situar la acción en presente, pasado, futuro, hacerla condicional o distinguir si es simple o continua. En chino el verbo solo existe en infinitivo, no se conjuga. El tiempo verbal lo da el contexto.  Lo que estamos viviendo en nuestro momento histórico es un cambio de contexto. Los valores están cambiando al ritmo veloz y líquido que marcan las ideas y tendencias lo que está amenazando y hundiendo instituciones y estructuras solidas tradicionales.  Por su lado China ha evolucionado a gran velocidad adaptándose a un mundo complejo y cambiante. Ha sabido mantener sus estructuras sociales básicas y añadir las que le ha parecido bien del exterior. La coexistencia de un sistema político firme con limitación de derechos civiles y una economía basada en capitalismo de estado, han permitido su elevación al puesto de primera potencia mundial.  Desde Europa seguimos sin entender cómo nuestra posición histórica de supremacía sigue devaluándose mientras la industria se desmantela, los mejores profesionales emigran, la población disminuye y la economía se hunde.   Asistimos con pavor al rápido deterioro del antiguo imperio americano al que considerábamos hermano y miramos con suspicacia la elevación del nuevo imperio chino que ha conseguido inundar nuestros mercados de productos baratos al enorme precio de haber fagocitado incontables puestos de trabajo y dejado al mínimo la estructura industrial.  De nada nos sirven nuestro superpoderes gramaticales si por mucho que podamos conjugar nuestros verbos nos movemos por contextos oscuros que no aportan ninguna claridad.  La única respuesta de calado que ha dado Estados Unidos es la transformación del capitalismo tradicional en un capitalismo de gigantes, permitiendo la emergencia de megacorporaciones monopolísticas que concentran una gran masa de poder. Estos gigantes tratan a los trabajadores como perros de paja y destruyen todo el entramado de pequeñas y medianas empresas de su sector y de los aledaños. Al final crecen ofreciendo competitividad al precio de eliminar derechos sociales y destruir empleo y entramado social.  El ciudadano europeo vive pues en la mitad de un espejismo de supermercados llenos y gran bonanza de bienes y servicios mientras las clases medias adelgazan y crecen las colas de la asistencia social.  La confusión, los gritos y las quejas sirven de poco. El ruido de fondo que crean medios de comunicación y redes sociales no favorece ni el silencio, ni la reflexión, ni la toma de conciencia. Queda algún intelectual pero su voz no llega lejos en medio de tanta algarabía, máxime cuando las crisis sociales se suceden y el miedo se extiende cada vez más.  Lo más revolucionario en este momento es algo tan simple como abrir los ojos. Ver que todo está cambiando según la antigua ley que permite que el más poderoso haga valer su voluntad. Entender que necesitaremos mucha creatividad para adaptarnos. Confiar en que podremos aportar el valor que los tiempos exigen.  Blind to change The future is veiled from mortals. There is a black abyss that prevents their vision. But misfortune overcomes when this blindness invades the present continuous and human beings lose the faculty to discriminate and understand. A time of bonanza can quickly turn into a time of catastrophe when the mist of indecision, blockage and lack of judgment fills the open air with its opaque cloths. And this is the bad news that I had to announce to you: this is a dense fog outside.  The paradox is that some can see through that cloud, specifically the Chinese speakers. The simplest way to explain it has to do with verbs, since they are responsible for expressing the action in relation to time. In European languages, verbs are conjugated to adapt to a wide range of verb tenses, which allows us to situate the action in the present, past, future, make it conditional or distinguish whether it is simple or continuous. In Chinese the verb only exists in the infinitive, it is not conjugated. The verb tense is given by the context.  What we are experiencing in our historical moment is a change of context. Values are changing at the rapid and liquid pace set by ideas and trends, which is threatening and sinking traditional institutions and solid structures.  For its part, China has evolved at great speed, adapting to a complex and changing world. It has known how to maintain its basic social structures and add those that it has found good from the outside. The coexistence of a strong political system with limited civil rights and an economy based on state capitalism has allowed it to rise to the position of world power.  From Europe we still do not understand how our historical position of supremacy continues to devalue as industry is dismantled, the best professionals emigrate, the population declines and the economy collapses.   We witness with dread the rapid deterioration of the old American empire that we considered our brother, and we look with suspicion at the rise of the new Chinese empire that has managed to flood our markets with cheap products at the enormous price of having phagocytized countless jobs and left the industrial structure at a minimum.  Our super grammatical powers are of no use to us if, however much we can conjugate our verbs, we move around in dark contexts that bring no clarity.  The only significant response that the United States has given is the transformation of traditional capitalism into a capitalism of giants, allowing the emergence of monopolistic mega-corporations that concentrate a large mass of power. These giants treat the workers like “straw dogs” and destroy the whole network of small and medium-sized enterprises in their sector and those around them. In the end they grow by offering competitiveness at the price of eliminating social rights and destroying jobs and the social fabric.  The European citizen lives then in the middle of a mirage of full supermarkets and great bonanza of goods and services while the middle classes are thinning and the queues of social assistance are growing.  The confusion, the shouting and the complaints are of little use. The background noise created by the media and social networks does not encourage silence, reflection or awareness. There are still some intellectuals, but their voices do not reach far in the midst of so much noise, especially when social crises follow one another and fear spreads more and more.  The most revolutionary thing at this moment is something as simple as opening one's eyes. To see that everything is changing according to the old law that allows the most powerful to enforce their will. Understanding that we will need a lot of creativity to adapt.
