The Obelisk stands like an icon of the city of Buenos Aires. One of those "must see" sights, and a classic postcard of the city. It was built in 1936 to celebrate the 400 years of the foundation of the city. It stand in the Plaza de la República, in the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Avenida Corrientes. In the very same spot where it is built, back in 1812, the Argentine flag was raised for the first time. It only took 31 days to build. In charge of the project was the German group Siemens Bauunion - Grun & Bilfinger. The building{s design was in charge of architect Alberto Prebisch. It stands at nearly 68 metres high, which can be reached after a flight of 206 steps. The building has no elevator. A few years after the construction was completed, a municipal disposition ordered the demolishment of the obelisk, due to safety, economic and aesthetic reasons. Fortunately this disposition was vetoed by the executive municipal authorities, and the demolishment did not happen.
