Last night I realized that I lied when I described myself as a naïve girl that never had seen a pair of shoes of Manolo Blahnik. Maybe I did it just because it was something I needed to forget. Hace dos años fuí a Madrid con mi madre de compras, estuvimos paseando por el Barrio de Salamanca y su conocida Milla de Oro (nombre que recibe la calle Serrano por tener las tiendas más lujosas de toda la capital) y justo pasando por allí descubrimos un pequeño cartel con el nombre "MANOLO BLAHNIK" que te dirigía a un patio donde había una tienda diminuta. Allí, medio escondida estaba la tienda oficial de probablemente los zapatos más famosos del mundo occidental (gracias en, gran parte, a Carrie Bradshaw y sus amigas de "Sexo en Nueva York").
Like two years ago I went to Madrid with my mother to do some shopping. We walked on the streets where the most expensive and luxurious shops are and there, exactly at Calle Serrano, we saw a quite small sign with the name "MANOLO BLAHNIK" that directed you to a patio where there was a tiny store. It was the official shop of probably the most famous shoes in the world (thanks to Carrie Bradshaw and her friends of "Sex And The City")
No teníamos ninguna intención de volver a casa con unos manolos bajo el brazo, pero la curiosidad puede ser muy mala, así que allí entramos. Como dije era una tienda pequeñaja, llena de zapatos, bien podría haber sido una zapateria de barrio... Ví un par de zapatos que me gustaban y le pregunté a la empleada si estaban disponibles en la talla 41. Me contestó muy secamente que no había ningún zapato en esa talla. En ese momento, sentí que era un "Bigfoot" y la dependienta se convertía en una "guarra" neoyorquina que me gritaba en un tono agudo y estridente "No Manolos For You". Sí, soy consciente de que puedo ser muy exagerada.
Actually we didn't want to buy a pair of manolos, but you know how bad curiosity can be, so we had to get in. As I already told it was a really small shop and really it didn't look like a luxury shop but a corner shop. I saw a pair of shoes that I really liked, so I asked if they were in a size 41. The employee told me that there weren't any shoes in such a big size. Then I felt that I was a "Bigfoot" and that the seller became a newyorker "bitchy" that screamed at me "No Manolos For You". Yes, I know I can be a drama queen. Tengo que reconocer que salí de la tienda apenada, ya que todo parecía indicar que jamás de los jamases podría tener un par de Manolos... Sin embargo, al rato empecé a ver las cosas de otra manera... me dí cuenta de que no había sido educada para calzar unos Manolos sino para ir por la vida pisando fuerte, que no necesitaba que el señor Manolo hiciera unos zapatos lo suficientemente grandes para mí, sino que lo que me pedía el cuerpo era dejar grandes huellas por allí donde pasara y que, francamente, no quería las vacias vidas de Carrie, Samantha y compañía para mí.
I've to recognize that when I went out of that damned shop I was really sad because it seemed that I'll never be able to own a pair of Manolos... However, after a while I started to see everything in a different way... I realized that I hadn't been brought up for wearing a pair of Manolos but for being very self-confident, that really I didn't need that Mr. Blahnik made a pair of shoes big enough for me but leaving big marks in life and that, to be honest, I didn't want for me the shallow lives of Carrie, Samantha and company for me. En todo caso, hace unos meses descubrí que sí que había Manolos de mi talla. En Nordstrom los venden por internet hasta la talla 42.... Sin embargo, no creo que ahorre para comprarmelos. Manolos, no os necesito!!
Anyway, some months ago I found out that there are Manolos in my size. You can buy the online in Nordstrom and they offer you them until the size 42.... However I don't think I'll save for buying them. Manolos, I don't need you!!
