Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller conocida como Agatha Christie nació en 1890 en Torquay, Devon, en el seno de una familia de clase media alta. La más pequeña de tres hermanos, tuvo una infancia muy feliz, rodeada de mujeres fuertes e independientes.Recibió una educación hogareña, le enseñaron a leer, escribir, aritmética y a tocar el piano y la mandolina, además le gustaba mucho leer, así junto a su hermana leían los libros de  Walter Scott, John Milton, Alexandre Dumas, Jane Austen y Arthur Conan Doyle. La muerte de su padre cuando ella tenía 11 años marcó el final de su infancia.
En la adolescencia estudió en diversos institutos de París. A su regreso a Inglaterra en 1910 se fue durante tres meses con su madre enferma a un hotel en El Cairo, viaje que serviría de inspiración para algunas de sus historias.En 1914 se casó con Archibald Christie, un piloto, con el que tuvo una hija Rosalind y del que se divorciaría en 1928 lo que le sumió en una depresión, durante esa época publicó seis novelas, una colección de historias cortas y una serie de cuentos. A partir de 1926 y con la publicación de “El asesinato de Roger Ackroyd” comenzó a alcanzar un éxito notable. En 1930 se volvió a casar con el arqueólogo Max Mallowan, a quién acompañó en sus viajes a Irak y Siria donde pasaban largas temporadas.Todo lo que le era familiar lo solía utilizar en sus obras, tanto su ciudad natal como lo que se encontraba en sus múltiples viajes.El período de la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue la época donde escribió sus obras más conocidas y prestigiosas, así se publicaron entre otros: “Diez negritos”, “Un cadáver en la biblioteca” o “Cinco cerditos”, al mismo tiempo trabajaba en la farmacia de la “University College” de Londres.Después de la guerra redujo su ritmo de escritura y también comenzó a escribir más obras teatrales.En 1955 se fundó la “Agatha Christie Limited” con el fin de preservar los derechos de la mayoría de sus publicaciones.Entre otros premios recibió el “Grand Master Award” concedido por la Asociaciónde Escritores de Misterio y fue nombrada Comendadora de la Orden del Imperio Británico.En los años 70 su salud empeoró aunque continuó trabajando. Falleció de causas naturales el 12 de enero de 1976 alos 85 años en su residencia Winterbrook House. Sus restos fueron inhumados en el cementerio de Santa María en Cholsey.Christie publicó 66 novelas policíacas además de obras de teatro, seis novelas románticas, historias cortas, dos autobiografías, dos libros de poesía y un libro infantil. Utilizó en varias ocasiones el seudónimo Mary Westmacott para escribir novelas románticas. Conocida como “La reina del crimen”, por sus novelas de suspense y misterio y por dos de sus personajes más famosos Hércules Poirot y Miss Marple, ha entrado en el libro Guiness de los récords como una de las novelistas que más ha vendido de todos los tiempos.Si deseáis conocer más de la escritora o de su obra podéis visitar una página web oficialque lleva su nombre.
