El trayecto en tren había durado 17 horas y este había llegado más o menos a tiempo. La noche había sido un poco movidita con varía gente entrando y saliendo, con las ventanas del tren abierta así que el ruido dentro del vagón era mayor, la gente con las luces encendidas. Es increíble cómo son capaces de dormir con estas condiciones, pero me daba la sensación que en algunos casos o no les importaba o les ayudaba a dormir. Porque yo estaba cerrando la ventana, ya no solo por el ruido que también si no por el viento que me daba en la cara, y ellos venga a abrirla. Trataba de apagar las luces y el siguiente que venía no se preocupaba que la gente estuviera durmiendo la encendía sin miramientos y así la dejaba, y yo de nuevo a apagarlas. Así toda la noche, era un trabajo de Sisifo.
Finalmente llegamos a Udaipur. Una de las principales ciudades del Rajastán, antigua capital del imperio Mewar, también conocida como la ciudad de los lagos, la Venecia India, la cachemira del Rajastán, y ciudad donde se grabo la pelicula de James Bond Octopussy (lo cual te lo hacen recordar todas las noches, proyectando la misma pelicula en todas las terrazas de los bares y hoteles).

Nada más salir de la estación de trenes comenzó el asedio de los conductores de tuk tuk y taxistas. Uno tras otro preguntándonos a donde íbamos, otros que nos llevaban barato, otros nos decían un precio sin ni siquiera saber a dónde íbamos. Cuando le decías a uno que no, el que estaba al lado te preguntaba, sin darse por aludido la respuesta que le habíamos dado a su compañero diciéndole que no nos interesaba. Para ellos debería de ser como jugar a la lotería, tienes que probar para ver si te toca, aunque consiguen el efecto contrario enfadando a la gente. Ya una vez fuera del estacionamiento de la estación de trenes seguimos caminando hacia nuestra casa de huéspedes.
Esta vez parecía que el tiempo iba a estar con nosotros, ya que el sol pegaba con fuerza. Lo primero que notamos diferente con Mumbai era el tráfico. No era tan intenso en la ciudad, además las calles de la ciudad vieja eran más estrechas y los coches no podían ir tan rápido, ya que tenían que convivir con motos, personas y vacas.
Nos perdimos un poco para encontrar nuestra casa de huéspedes, ya que estaba dentro de un patio interior y si no te das cuenta era fácil pasar tres veces por delante para deleite de la gente local. Que nos miraba como si tuviéramos un pulpo por sombrero. Parece que no era algo típico solo de Mumbai.
El gerente de la casa de huéspedes no se encontraba en esos momentos, pero su padre nos abrió la puerta y nos enseñó la habitación, y el patio interior que daba una sensación de relax total en comparación con el exterior. Aunque el exterior en comparación con Mumbai esto estaba tan tranquilo como el desierto del Sahara. Cómo habíamos dormido “tanto” en el tren nos fuimos a hechar una siesta.
Ya más tarde pudimos conocer al dueño de la casa de invitados que nos comentó que si queríamos que el nos enseñaba a cocinar un plato típico indio y solo teníamos que pagar la comida. Además había otra pareja de japoneses que también estaban interesados en esto. Así que nos incorporamos a la clase de cocina. Mientras esperábamos que comenzara la clase nos fuimos a ver la vista desde lo alto de la terraza de la casa. Donde pudimos ver ya de noche iluminado el palacio real, los templos, y parte de la ciudad. Sin apenas haber visitado la ciudad, ya con esta vista prometía.
El resto de la noche lo pasamos charlando con la otra pareja de Japón y el dueño de la casa de huespedes, que resulta que sabía incluso un poco de japones.
Por la mañana tan pronto nos despertamos la primera imagen que nos encontramos fue la de unas vacas sentadas enfrente de la casa, rodeadas de motos y coches definitivamente estábamos en la India. Ese día fuimos a ver los lagos y subir al templo Neemach Mata Mandir en lo alto de la colina, un poco a las afueras de la ciudad. Ya que desde allí tendríamos unas vistas únicas y no estaría tan lleno de gente como el mirador que estaba en la colina cerca al palacio y que se podía ascender con teleférico. El paseo hacia el templo se hizo bastante agradable caminando por los lagos, pasando por zonas semipeatonales, con las vistas desde la presa, son lagos artificiales.
Buenos días vacas – Good morning cow
El problema empezó cuando comenzamos a subir la montaña, lo bueno es que puedes escoger entre subir por las escaleras empinadas o por el camino. En nuestro caso escogimos la segunda opción y comenzamos a subir despacito. Pero aún así el calor que hacía ese día era insoportable, no estábamos ni por la mitad cuando ya teníamos toda la camiseta mojada, como si hubiéramos corrido una maratón. Tuvimos que pararnos un par de veces ya que tampoco había mucha sombra y aprovechábamos estás para refrescarnos un poco. Aunque según subíamos las vistas ya empezaban a impresionarnos, cuando finalmente llegamos al templo el “sufrimiento” había merecido la pena. El templo en si no era nada especial, pero la vista era inmejorable ya que se veía toda la ciudad más los palacios y castillos de la otra orilla del lago.

Sin darnos cuenta ya se nos había hecho tarde y eran las tres y ya teníamos un hambre canina. Bajamos la montaña y cerca de la presa encontramos un restaurante, Steam Restaurant, tranquilo para comer con un jardín y un personal muy atento. Pedimos un Thali del Rajastan (Plato con pequeñas porciones de comida y arroz) y arroz al estilo de Manchuria, fueron los dos mejores platos de este estilo que hemos comido en India. Ya llenos nos volvimos a casa para ducharnos, volviendo de nuevo paseando por el lago. Durante el paseo nos encontramos con varias familias donde algunos padres forzaban un poco a sus hijos para que hablaran en inglés con nosotros, aunque fuera decir un simple hola, también alguna gente quería que nos sacáramos fotos con ellas. Al final entre una cosa y otra llegamos ya al atardecer y justo a tiempo ya que empezó a llover con todas. En mi caso coincidió cuando estaba dentro de la ducha que era en un cuarto afuera de la habitación y me caía tanto agua de la ducha como agua de lluvia através del hueco entre el tejado y la puerta. Al menos que no se diga que será por falta de agua para ducharme.

Ya una vez duchados, esta vez en la ducha, nos fuimos a comer algo a una de las terrazas. En Udaipur existen varias terrazas con vistas al lago, parece que incluso tienen una competición entre ellas, para ver cual es la mejor: La terraza más alta de Udaipur; la terraza con las mejores vistas; la terraza que tiene el ascensor más alto; la terraza con la mejor comida; etc. Y todos tratan de venderte la suya para que subas, y pueden llegar a ser muuuuuuy pesados, uno nos llegó a insistir todos los días que fueramos a la suya, para ir a comer o tomar algo. Cuanto más nos insistían menos ganas teníamos de ir al sitio que nos ofrecían, desde luego si querían agradar a clientes europeos atosigarlos no es la mejor forma, aunque tarde o temprano ya aprenderán. Comimos algo sencillo y después nos fuimos a dar una vuelta por el lago, donde ahí una especie de mirador con una vista de ensueño del palacio de la ciudad.

El tercer día fuimos a ver el palacio de la ciudad. Pero antes de entrar nos fuimos a comer un brunch a una de las terrazas, para disfrutar de una buena vista para comer y al mismo tiempo hacer algo de ejercicio subiendo escaleras 😀
El palacio se compone de varios edificios que han sido construido a lo largo de un periodo de 400 años, así que teníamos historia para visitar. Como ya habíamos mencionado en la primera entrada sobre India, aquí nos encontramos con diferencias de precio para turistas o gente local, nosotros pagamos 300 rupias (4 euros), los locales 30 rupias (40 céntimos de euro). Barato para nuestros estándares, pero también sigue siendo difícil de acostumbrarse.

La visita al palacio fue educativa en terminos de ver como vivían los Marajás y la historia de la región. También si hacemos una comparación de periodos con la baja y alta edad media en Europa (periodo en el cual fue construido) y como vivían los reyes en Europa, estos últimos no salen muy bien parados en la comparativa. La decoración de los edificios, el estilo dentro del mismo, los jardines incluso en plantas superiores, los baños, las salas, todo de un cuidado exquisito, que transmitía una sensación de calma, bienestar y de lujo increibles.

La organización de la visita es tal que no deja muchas opciones de volver hacia atrás, da la sensación que estás en un laberinto, con sus recovecos y callejones sin salida. Cuando pensabas que ya se estaba acabando la visita, subías a un nuevo piso o una plaza se abría delante nuestra para seguir explorando. Al final sin darnos ni cuenta pasamos casi tres horas explorando sus patios, jardines, exhibiciones, disfrutando de la vista de la ciudad. Cuando volvimos a salir de nuevo al patio de la entrada principal nos dimos cuenta de que sólo habíamos visitado la mitad del palacio así que fuimos a ver la otra parte, cuando llegamos a la entrada que divide el palacio en dos nos encontramos con que teníamos que pagar de nuevo otra entrada. Así que visto que eran ya las 2:30 y con temor que si entrábamos en la otra mitad nos íbamos a pasar de nuevo otras tres horas. Decidimos ir a comer.

Como queríamos ir a ver el mirador desde la colina fuimos en esa dirección, ya que habíamos visto algunos sitios para comer el primer día que llegamos. Tan pronto como salimos del palacio, y por suerte cuando pasábamos cerca de nuestro alojamiento, empezó a llover. Sabiendo cómo se las gasta la lluvia por esta región entramos en uno de los restaurantes más cercanos, el Lotus cafe. En el cual nos llevamos una grata sorpresa, por que no nos esperábamos tener una comida tan rica y tan barata cerca del centro. Yo pedí de nuevo un Thali ya que me había encantado y Ale un Paneer Lababdar (un curry con una especie de queso a la barbacua, pimienta y cebolla). Estaba todo para chuparse los dedos. Como la lluvia no paraba nos volvimos a la casa de huespedes a relajarnos un poco.
El último día nos fuimos por la mañana a la estación de autobuses para comprobar como llegar allí. Ya que el primer día nos habíamos perdido, esta vez quisimos estar seguros de como llegar. Teníamos un autobús con dirección a Jodhpur, la ciudad azul, a las 7 de la mañana y no nos dejaba mucho margen para equivocarnos. De camino nos encontramos con una vaca “maquillada” que nos llamó la atención, esto aún no lo habíamos visto 😀

La estación de autobuses no queda muy lejos, en nuestro caso habíamos comprado el billete de autobús en uno de los muchos locales que se dedican a vender billetes de transporte. Recomendamos preguntar bastante ya que ahí grandes diferencias de precio entre una compañía y otra. Nosotros cogimos un autobús sin aire acondicionado, ya que lo suelen poner al máximo y pareces que estás en el polo norte. Una vez comprobado donde quedaba la estación fuimos a ver diferentes parques de Udaipur: Sahelion Ki Bari, que era el antiguo alojamiento del harén del marajá, y el Moti Magris, que es donde se rinde homenaje a todos los majarás importantes de la historia de la región.
La verdad es que el paseo por las dos zonas merece la pena, de nuevo tuvimos discriminación para entrar en el harén, pero para sorpresa nuestra la entrada a Moti Magris era igual para toda la gente. Si tuvieramos que elegir entre las dos recomendaría ir a este último ya que se respira una tranquilidad inusual en la ajetreada Udaipur, tienes unas vistas panorámicas de la ciudad, puedes visitarlas sin guías ya que tienen paneles informativos para enterarte, y apenas van turistas ni locales ni extranjeros.

De noche volvimos al hotel, pero antes de hacerlo fuimos a visitar el templo Jagdish que estaba cerca del palacio de la ciudad y nuestro alojamiento. Íbamos a cenar en la casa de invitados ya que el dueño nos iba a preparar pollo al curry. ¡Viva el picante! Además que teníamos que empaquetar todo para nuestro siguiente destino. Nos pasamos la noche hablando con el dueño de la casa de huespedes, es un encanto, y una pareja británica que había llegado esa noche.

The train trip lasted 17 hours and it arrived more or less on time. The night was quite lively, the windows were open, so there was a lot of noise inside the wagon, people were switching on the lights. It´s unbelievable that they can sleep in these conditions, but I had the feeling that in some cases they didn´t even care or it helped them sleep. Because I was closing the window, not only bothered by the noise, but also by the wind that was hitting me in the face, and they kept opening it. I was trying to switch of the lights and the next person coming did not care if the people were sleeping and they were switching it on and let it on, and I was switching it off again. This went on the whole night, a work for Sisyphus.
We finally arrived to Udaipur. One of the main cities of Rajasthan, old capital of the Mewar empire, also known as the city of lakes, the Indian Venice, the cashmere of Rajasthan and the city where the James Bond movie, Octopussy, was filmed (and they remind it to you every evening, because there are projections of this movie in all the terraces, bars and hotels).

As soon as we went out from the train station, the siege of the tuk tuk drivers and taxi drivers started. One after the other asking where we were going, some saying that they will take us for a good price, some telling us a price without even knowing where we were going. When you were saying “no” to one of them, the next one was asking the same thing, without caring about the reply we had given to his colleague. This must be like a lottery to them, they have to try until they win, although sometimes this has the contrary effect and people get annoyed. We went further and we walked to our guesthouse.
This time, the weather seemed to be on our side and the sun was quite strong. The first difference we noticed between Udaipur and Mumbai was the traffic. It wasn´t as intense as in the big city, besides this, the streets of the old city were narrow and the cars couldn´t go as fast, since they had to share the streets with motorbikes, people and cows.
We got a bit lost on the way to the guesthouse, because it was in an interior courtyard and if you don´t realize this, it´s very easy to pass in front of it for three time, for the entertainment of the local people. Who were watching us as if we had an octopus on our heads. It seemed that this was not something typical only for Mumbai.
The owner of the guesthouse was not there at the time, but his father opened the door for us and showed us our room and the garden, that was giving us a feeling of calm in comparison with the exterior. Although the exterior, compared to Mumbai, was as calm as Sahara. Since we had slept “a lot” in the train, we went to have a nap.
Later, we met the owner of the guesthouse, who asked us if we wanted him to show us how he was cooking a typical dish and all we had to pay was the food. Besides, there was a Japanese couple also interested to see it. So we joined this cooking class. Meanwhile we were waiting for the class to start, we went on the rooftop, to see the view. From there, we could see the City Palace, illuminated in the evening, the temples and part of the city. Without even visiting the city, it looked promising.
Next day we went to see the lakes and we went up to the Neemach Mata Mandir temple, on a hill, a bit outside the city. We thought that the views from there would be unique and there wouldn´t be as many people as in the viewpoint that is on the hill close to the palace and where you can take a cable car. The walk towards the temple was quite pleasant, close to the lake, passing through semi-pedestrian areas, with the views from the dam, since they are artificial lakes.

The problems appeared when we started to go uphill, the good thing is that you can choose the stairs or the alley. We chose the alley and we started to go up slowly. However, the heat that day was hard to resist, so at less than halfway up our t-shirts were already wet, as if we had run a marathon. We had to stop a few times, since there were not many places with shade and we were taking advantage and refreshed a bit, when we did find one. The higher we got, the better the views were getting and when we got to the temple, the “suffering” was all worth it. The temple itself wasn´t special, but the views were the best, because we could see the whole city, the palaces and the castles on the other side of the lake.

We hadn´t realized that it was already three o´clock and we were starving. We went down and close to the dam we found a restaurant, Steam Restaurant, a quiet place with a garden and a very attentive staff. We asked for a Rajasthan Thali (a dish made of other small dishes and rice) and Manchurian style rice, these were to of the best dishes of this type that we ate in India. Already full we went back home to take a shower, having a walk along the lake again. During our walk, we met several families and some parents were forcing a bit their kids to speak English to us, even if it was just to say hello, also some people wanted us to take pictures with them. In the end, in between one thing and another, we arrived home in the late afternoon and on time, when the heavy rain started. I was in the shower when it happened, which was outside and I had both water from the rain and from the shower, in the space between the roof and the door. I guess like this I couldn´t say that I didn´t have water for the shower.

After the shower, a real one this time, we went to eat something at one of the terraces. There are many lake view rooftop terraces in Udaipur and it seems that they are competing against each other, to see which one is the best: the highest terrace in Udaipur, the one with the best view, the one that has an elevator, the one with the best food etc. And they are all trying to convince you to go up in theirs, thing that can make them quite annoying, one of the guys was telling us every day to go to his terrace and eat or drink something. The more they insisted, the least we felt like going to that particular place, if they want to get more European clients, insisting so much is not the best way, although sooner or later they will understand this. We ate something simple and then we went for a walk around the lake, where there is a sort of viewpoint to the beautiful City Palace.

On our third day, we went to see the City Palace. But before the visit, we went to have brunch in one of the terraces, in order to have a nice view and do a bit of exercise going up the stairs :D.
The palace is formed of many buildings that were built during 400 years, so we had a lot of history to see. As we mentioned in the first post about India, there is a price difference between the tickets for the tourists or for the local people, we paid 300 rupees (4 euros), the locals 30 rupees( 40 euro cents)- Cheap for our standards, but it still takes time to get used to it.

The visit was an educational one, in the sense that we saw how the Maharajahs used to live and we got too know a bit about the history of the region. If we make a comparison between the low and the high medieval age in Europe (when the City Palace was built) and how the kings if Europe used to live, the latter do not look good. The buildings´decoration, the style of the buildings, the gardens, even on the upper floors, the bathrooms,s the rooms, everything carefully chosen, they gave a feeling of incredible peace and quiet, calm and luxury.

The way the visit is organized does not give you too many options to go back, it seems like you are in a labyrinth, with the nooks and small alleys without exit. When you thought that the visit was over, you where getting to another floor or you were reaching a square and you kept exploring. In the end, time passed by so easily and we realized that we had spent three hours in the palace, exploring the yards, the gardens, the exhibitions, enjoying the view of the city. When we went back to the yard that is at the main entrance, we realized we had seen only half of the palace, so we went to see the other part, but arriving to the entrance that separates the palace in two, we saw that we had to pay another entrance fee. So given that it was already 2:30 and thinking that we´d spend two or three more hours there, we went to eat.

We wanted to see the viewpoint from the hill we started to go in that direction, given that we had seen some restaurants in that area on our first day. As soon as we went out from the palace, it started to rain. Knowing how rain was there, we went to one of the closest restaurants, Lotus Cafe. We had a very nice surprise, because we were not expecting such good food and cheap so close to the center. I asked again for a Thali, since I loved the first one and Ale for a Paneer Lababdar. (a sort of masala with grilled soft cheese, peppers and onion). Everything was delicious. With the rain pouring, we went back to our guesthouse to relax a bit.
We spent the morning of our last day going to the bus station, in order to see how we were supposed to get there. Since we got lost the first day, we wanted to make sure that we did it right the second time. We had a bus to Jodhpur, the blue city, at 7 in the morning and we didn´t really have too much time to get lost. On the way we saw a cow with “make-up” that was hard to miss, this was something we hadn´t seen yet 😀

The bus station is not very far, we had bought the ticket in one of the many places that sell bus/train/air tickets. We recommend you to ask in many travel offices, because there might be big price differences between the bus companies. We chose a bus without air conditioning, because they put it on maximum and it feels like you are at the North Pole. After we checked where was the bus station, we went to see various parks from Udaipur: Sahelion Ki Bari, which was the old accommodation for the maharajah´s harem, and Moti Magris, where they honor all the important maharajahs in the history of the region.
The truth is that the walk to these two areas is worth the visit, we had again to pay a different ticket for the harem, but the entrance to Moti Magris was the same for everybody. If we had to choose between the two of them, we´d choose the second one, because it gives you the chance to be unusually calm in the busy Udaipur, you have beautiful views of the city, you don´t need a guide because they have information boards, and there are almost no tourists – local or foreigners.

In the evening we went back to the guesthouse, but before this we went to see the Jagdish temple, which was close to the palace and to the guesthouse. We were again having dinner there, since the owner was preparing Chicken Masala for us. Long live the spicy food! We were also supposed to pack for the morning. We spent the evening talking to our host, he is a very nice person. and to a British couple, that had just arrived that evening.
