Face Off

¡Buenas! Tenía muchas ganas de recomendar un reality show que me ha atrapado desde el minuto uno y no tenía ni idea que existía. Se llama Face Off, o Cara a Cara en España. 

Siempre me fascinó el "detrás de escena" del Séptimo Arte, tanto el vestuario, los escenarios, el maquillaje como los efectos especiales. Me encanta poder ver como los artistas diseñan, esculpen, moldean y aplican sus maquillajes utilizando diversos métodos. Es un trabajo que requiere mucha creatividad, habilidad e ingenio. Descubrí este reality show hace menos de una semana en el canal Energy (España) y como no pude esperar, lo estoy viendo a través de internet y ya terminé de ver la segunda temporada! Ya van cinco temporadas emitidas en Estados Unidos por la cadena Syfy y el 14 de enero se estrena la sexta temporada.  

¿De que se trata?Como en todo reality show, un grupo de personas compite entre si para lograr el primer puesto en la competencia. En este caso, un grupo de artistas de maquillaje prostético compiten demostrando sus habilidades artísticas para crear un maquillaje digno de aparecer en la gran pantalla. Cada semana, los participantes deben realizar un maquillaje específico de acuerdo a cada desafío. En general el ganador del desafío semanal queda inmune de eliminación para la próxima ronda, pero no siempre es así. Además, al final del cada episodio hay un participante eliminado.

Los juecesPara los que están familiarizados con los realities, se sabe que existe en el show un panel de jueces que deciden el destino de los participantes. En Face Off nos encontramos con la talentosa Ve Neill, una reconocida maquilladora en la industria cinematográfica y ganadora de tres Premios Oscar (sus trabajos incluyen Ed Wood, Beetlejuice y Los Juegos del Hambre), Glen Hetrick, maquillador de cine y televisión y diseñador (Buffy La Cazavampiros, Heroes y Los Juegos del Hambre) y el diseñador de criaturas y director de cine Patrick Tatopoulos (Soy Leyenda, Resident Evil: Extinction) además de otros reconocidos jueces invitados en cada emisión. El show es presentado por McKenzie Westmore que además es miembro de una reconocida familia en el mundo del maquillaje. El premioUn ganador se lleva 100.000 dolares y maquillaje por un año de Alcone. Además de otros premios diferentes de acuerdo cada temporada y el reconocimiento en la industria del maquillaje artístico. 

Una vez que los participantes tienen claro cual es el reto y eligen a sus modelos, comienza el proceso creativo de diseño donde los artistas realizan bocetos del maquillaje que pretenden crear. La segunda etapa es la del moldeado de las piezas o por último el proceso de aplicación y toques finales. Tienen en total 3 días para completar los looks.Lo único que no me ha gustado es que debido al corto plazo que tienen los artistas para completar los desafíos, el resultado muchas veces queda incompleto o descuidado pero creo que sirve para saber quienes tienen el talento para hace milagros en poco tiempo.

It's called Face Off.I always loved the "behind the scenes" of the Seventh Art, especially costume design, the setting, makeup and special effects. I love to see how artists design, sculpt, mold and apply their prosthetic makeup using various methods. It is a job that requires a lot of creativity, skills and originality. I just finished watching the second season. On Jan 14th, the show will start its 6th season in the channel network Syfy in the United States.

What's it all about?As with any reality show, a group of people compete among each other to get to the first place in the competition. In this case, a group of prosthetic makeup artists compete to demonstrate their artistic skills to create a complete makeup character worthy of appearing on the big screen. Each week, the participants must achieve a specific makeup according to each theme challenge and at the end of each episode one contestant will be deemed the winner, sometimes earning inmunity for the next challenge, and one artist will be eliminated from the show. The judgesThere is a panel of judges who decide the fate of the participants. In Face Off there are three main jugdes. Three time Academy Award winner Ve Neill, a renowned makeup artist in the film industry (her works include Ed Wood, Beetlejuice and The Hunger Games), Glen Hetrick, film and television make-up artist and designer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Heroes and the Hunger Games) and creature designer and director Patrick Tatopoulos (I Am Legend, Resident Evil : Extinction) and other renowned guest judges.The show is hosted by McKenzie Westmore who is also a member of a renowned family in the makeup world.The prizeThe winner of the show receives USD 100,000 and one year worth of make up provided by Alcone.  There are other prizes that vary from each season.Once the participants have a clear concept design regarding the theme challenge, the creative design process begins. They have 3 days to complete the looks. Artists make ​​sketches and begin sculpting for five hours. On the sencond day, the participants mold their pieces for ten hours and on the last day, they apply the pieces to their models and have an hour for touch ups.The result is often incomplete and sloppy due to the short period of time they have to complete full make-up looks but I believe that helps to really know who has the talent to do miracles in such a short time.Are you guys watching this show?
