El primer fin de semana de Julio fue bastante caluroso en Rumanía con temperaturas rondando los 40 grados. Aún así y con esta canícula nos fuimos de visita a Bucarest a ver unos amigos y disfrutar un poco la ciudad, esta vez sin el estress de las visitas anteriores para encontrarnos con toda la gente.
Entre Craiova y Bucarest existen varios trenes que comunican las dos ciudades, aunque también existen autobuses, estos tardan más y cuestan lo mismo, nos fuimos en tren debido a la comodidad y los horarios. Os dejo aquí el enlance de la compañía de trenes para aquellos que quieran viajar en Rumanía.
El tren llego a tiempo a pesar del calor y los anuncios de que podrían llegar tarde debido a los controles extras que se iban a hacer debido a las altas temperaturas en las vías. El tren tenía aire acondicionado así pues no sufrimos mucho con la calor, pero con temperaturas de 38 grados lo que nos apetecía era ir a tomar algo para refrescarnos, pero aún así después de tres horas en el tren también queríamos movernos un poco. De la estación de tren cogimos el metro. El ticket para 10 viajes vale 20 lei (unos cinco euros) y valen para dos personas, así que nos compensaba cogerlo.
Salimos en Piata Romana y estuvimos dando un paseo para estirar las piernas y cuando el calor era ya insoportable nos fuimos a tomar algo a la cafeteria Verona en la calle Arthur Verona. Tiene un jardín magnífico y un menú con varias bebidas para todos los gustos. De ahí fuimos a encontrarnos con nuestra amiga y pasamos el resto de la tarde en su casa preparando la cena, Shaksuka, y charlando.
Al día siguiente fue uno de los más calurosos hasta la fecha de este verano en Rumanía llegando a los 40 grados. Aún así sabiendo lo que nos iba a esperar salimos a visitar Bucarest, ero con el plan ajustado a esas temperaturas. Por la mañana nos fuimos a ver el parque Herastru al lado de donde se encuentra el arco del triunfo y también para los que estén interesados hay un museo etnográfico sobre las tradiciones de Rumanía. El parque es bastante grande, principalmente debido al lago que está en el medio, y tiene muchas posibilidades y lugares de interés además de donde poder tomar algo en un sitio tranquilo en la ajetreada Bucarest. Lo bueno de este parque es que se suelen realizar diferentes actividades a lo largo del año. Nosotros tuvimos la suerte de coincidir con un festival gastronómico durante ese fin de semana. Curiosamente había un sitio de comida española, aunque de española no tenía mucho excepto el origen de algunos productos, hacer una “paella” en una olla grande… eso ni es “paella” ni es nada. En fin… seguramente si hicieramos “mamaliga” o “ciorba de burta” haríamos también algún sacrilegio para ellos 😉
Aún habiendo muchos puestos de comida teníamos planeado ir a comer al centro, y dejamos el festival para el día siguiente. Fuimos a comer a Caru cu bere en el centro de la ciudad al lado del museo de historia de la ciudad. La comida en el sitio es muy buena, nosotros comimos de entrante “salata de vinete” está hecho con berenjenas asadas muy rico, y para comer nos pedimos “Tocanita de miel cu legume” (Asado de cordero con legumbres) y “Varza acra calită servita cu carnati” (Repollo con “salchicha”), pero lo que más llama la atención es la decoración interior del mismo. Como una imagen vale más que mil palabras os dejo aquí la foto.
Al acabar de comer nos fuimos a dar un paseo por el centro histórico. Este ha sido renovado en los últimos años y ahora se ha convertido en una zona viva de nuevo con varios bares y cafes para tomar algo alrededor. En el centro puedes encontrar diversos edificios muy interesantes como la corte vieja, la iglesia de Stavropoleos entre otros. Un poco más tarde fuimos caminando hacia el Atheneum, en la calle Victoria para encontrar a una amiga. La zona del Atheneum de por si merece una visita para ver los edificios magnificos que hay allí, y dar un paseo por la calle Victoria es uno de los mejores que puedes hacer en Bucarest para descubrir el antiguo explendor del París del Este.

“Cerca” del Atheneum ahí una terraza de verano muy interesante, que además tiene su bar cercano. Si tenéis la posibilidad es un buen sitio para descansar en el M60, y además podéis pedir algo de comida para reponer energía.

Después del parque fuimos a ver el edificio del parlamento, el cual se puede visitar en parte si tienes interés, y una vez acabada la visita volvimos al parque Herastru, para encontrarnos con otra amiga y disfrutar ahora si del festival gastronómico, eso si de la paella ni probamos 😉

Por la tarde y como las temperaturas seguían bastante altas y yo soy un forofo de la historia nos fuimos al museo de historia donde había una exhibición temporal de la primera guerra mundial y de Sarmizegetusa Ulpia (la antigua capital romana de la Dacia) Además de esto tiene las exposiciones permanentes de la copia de la columna de Trajano (en el siglo XIX quisieron instalarla en Bucarest) y del tesoro nacional. La verdad es que ha sido muy interesante de ver las exhibiciones y ver la columna trajano sin estar en Roma, es un plus 😀
Ya con la tarde acabando y las temperaturas bajando nos fuimos a una terraza en el centro histórico Food Hood, es un espacio abierto donde tienes varios chiringitos de comida, bebidas, ropa, es como una especie de mercadillo callejero. Además de que tiene un area con sillas de playa y arena para disfrutar de tus bebidas en la “playa sin mar”. Para acabar la noche nos fuimos a encontrar otros amigos y nos encontramos en el bar llamado acuarela, donde además te dan pinturas y papel para dar riendas suelta a tu creatividad mientras bebes alguno de sus cocktails o disfrutas de un café.
Lo bueno que tiene Bucarest si quieres hacer una visita de turismo es que de momento no está tan masificado como en otros sitios, los precios siguen siendo razonablemente bajos, tiene una comunicación decente que te permite llegar a la mayoría de los sitios de interés turístico, en verano hay festivales de diferentes tipos casi todos los días y tiene buena cobertura de alojamientos para todos los gustos. Así pues el momento de disfrutar de Bucarest es ahora antes de que se convierta en otra Praga, Barcelona o Amsterdan con cientos de turistas.

The first weekend of July was pretty hot in Romania, with the temperatures going close to 40 degrees. Despite the heatwave, we went on a trip to Bucharest to see some friends and enjoy a bit the city, this time without the stress of the last visits, when we wanted to see most of our friends in a short time.
Between Craiova and Bucharest there are many trains that connect the cities and even if there are buses too, the trip is longer and the price is the same, so we took the train, due to the comfort and the timetable. I leave here the link for the timetable page for the ones of you who want to travel in Romania.
The train arrived on time, despite the heat and the announcements that there were extra measures taken due to the high temperatures on the rails. The train had air conditioning, so we did not suffer because of the heat, but going out at 38 degrees made us want to refresh and drink something, even walking a bit after 3 hours in the train. From the train station we took the metro. The ticket for 10 trips is 20 lei (around 5 euros) and it can be used by two people, so it worked for us.
We went out in Piata Romana and had a walk, stretched our legs and when the heat became unbearable we went for a drink at the Verona Garden, on Arthur Verona street. The garden is beautiful and the menu quite diverse, with drinks for all tastes. From there we went to meet our friend and we spent the rest of the evening in her place, cooking dinner, Shaksuka, and talking.
Next day was one of the hottest this summer in Romania, with the temperature going up to 40 degrees. Even if we knew what was waiting for us, we went out to visit the city, with the plan adjusted to the high temperatures. In the morning we went to the Herastrau Park, which is close to the Arch of Triumph and, for those of you that are interested, there is an ethnographic museum, about the Romanian traditions. The park is quite big, mainly due to the lake that is at its center and it offers a lot of possibilities to relax, as well as interesting places and the chance to have a drink in a quiet place, in busy Bucharest. A good thing in this park is that there are some activities organized all year long. We were lucky and we were there when a food festival was taking place. By chance, there was as well Spanish food, although it wasn’t too Spanish besides some ingredients that they were using, preparing “paella” in a big pot…that is not paella at all. Anyway… I think that if we will try to prepare “mamaliga” or “ciorba de burta” in Spain, we would commit some sort of sacrilege for them ;).
Even if there were a few food stands, we let them for the next day, because we were planning to eat in the city centre. We went to Caru’ cu bere, that is close to the National History Museum. The food is very good, we had as a starter “salata de vinete” that is made of baked eggplants, very tasty, and as main courses we tried “Tocanita de miel cu legume” (lamb stew with vegetables) and Varza acra calită servita cu carnati” (Braised sauerkraut with sausages), but more noticeable here is the interior decoration of this restaurant. After eating, we went for a walk in the old town. This area was renovated in the last years and it became again very lively, with a lot of bars and cafes around where you can drink something. There are many interesting buildings in the centre, like the Old Court and the Stavropoleos monastery, among others. A bit later we went walking towards the Athenaeum, on Victoria street, to meet a friend. The area of the Athenaeum is worthy to visit, for all the beautiful buildings that are there and going for a walk on Victoria street is one of the best things to do in Bucharest in order to discover the old splendor of the Paris of the East.

“Close” to the Athenaeum there is a very interesting summer terrace, that has its own bar. If you have the opportunity, M60 is a good place to relax and to grab a bite, so that you get some energy.

After spending some time in the park, we went to see the building of the Parliament, that can be visited if you are interested to do so, and after the visit we went back to Herastrau park, to meet another friend and enjoy the food festival, but without trying the paella 😉

In the afternoon, since the temperatures were still quite high and I am a history fan, we went to the History Museum, where there was a temporary exhibition of the First World War and Ulpia Sarmizegetusa (the old roman capital of Dacia). Besides this, the museum hosts permanent exhibitions of the copy of Trajan`s column (in the 19th century, they wanted to install it in Bucharest) and of the national treasure. The truth is that it was very interesting to see these exhibitions and to see the column without being in Rome, is a plus :D.
In the late afternoon, since the temperatures were going down a bit, we went to a terrace in the old centre. Food Hood is an open space where there are a few food, drinks and clothes stands, it´s a sort of street market. Besides, there is an area with beach chairs and sand, so that you enjoy your drinks on the beach without sea. For the end of the evening, we went to meet other friends in a bar called acuarela, where they give you water colors and paper, so that you free your creativity while having some of their cocktails or coffee.
The good thing about Bucharest if you want to visit it, is that right now it´s not as crowded as other cities, the prices are still reasonable, it has good connections that allow you to get to most of the touristic places, there are many different festivals almost every day during summer and it has a good accommodation offer for all the tastes. Now it´s the moment to enjoy Bucharest before it becomes another Prague, Barcelona or Amsterdam, with hundreds of tourists.
